SUMMARY

We are seeking a Director of Design Engineering who will be responsible for technical leadership, support, and direction to the Design Engineering team in all aspects of PV and BESS for DG and Utility Scale projects.   

The Director, Design Engineering is responsible for leading Nexamp’s world-class design engineering team. This team performs the design engineering for commercial- and utility-scale PV and ESS projects across Nexamp’s national pipeline and portfolio. This role will manage the department in providing design deliverables from conceptual development designs through stamped construction drawing sets. This position is also responsible for value engineering and optimization efforts throughout the design process. The Director, Design Engineering will report to the Vice President, Engineering and will work closely with the Business Development and Construction teams as well as in-house and external engineering departments.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a multi-level national team of PV design engineers in all phases of solar and energy storage development, construction, and asset management 
  • Manage project design efforts through development, permitting, construction and close-out, overseeing development, permitting and construction designs, as well as creation and review of energy models throughout the project life cycle  
  • Develop department SOPs, workflows, design standards and internal processes as well as managing relationships with internal customers and external resources 
  • Independently set priorities, allocate resources, and make complex technical and commercial decisions, elevating to senior management when necessary 
  • Lead the training and mentoring of engineering department personnel, enabling professional growth, and facilitating company expansion by developing regional leads and senior engineers  
  • Manage the department strategy for enabling Nexamp’s growth through resource planning, hiring, and 3rd party turnkey engineering support, as well as developing and maintaining relationships with a network of engineering consultants  
  • Review project drawing sets and energy models throughout development, permitting, and construction, ensuring design quality, accuracy, and conformance with Nexamp standards 
  • Lead department in value engineering to optimize project economic and technical profile 
  • Provide technical leadership to Nexamp development, engineering, procurement, construction, and O&M departments for the entire project lifecycle 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6+ years of commercial or utility-scale solar design engineering experience 
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience required 
  • NABCEP Solar certification or equivalent preferred 
  • EIT required, PE License preferred 
  • AutoCAD and PVSYST software proficiency required 
  • MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software proficiency 
  • PVCase and Helioscope software proficiency preferred 
  • Strong knowledge of industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code, International Building Code, International Fire Code and other standards relevant to the industry 
  • Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including both DC and medium voltage AC 
  • Working knowledge of civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering principles 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to manage a multi-level team as well as work independently 
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects and tasks
