Job Description

Role title: Advanced Analytics Analyst

Location: Bristol (or Remote)

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

In Field Operations, part of OVO Retail, we are working hard to give every member a route to leading a carbon zero lifestyle at home, beginning with the rollout of smart metering systems that will enable them to control their energy and make choices about how they become more energy efficient. You’ll be part of an ambitious team who are restless and passionate about creating a better future for all. We are always open to new things, and curious to create solutions that our customers will love. We are constantly learning to innovate the way we operate and set bold goals that deliver on our strategic priorities.

Our Business Intelligence team sits at the heart of Field Operations' push to use data to bear on some of our thorniest problems. We most commonly use Python, R, SQL and Tableau, with data from the business that we usually need to extract, transform and load.

What will I be doing?

We are looking to create and develop high impact data products that will be productionised and widely used across Field Operations and adhoc insight that directly influences operational and policy decisions. These may include automation, advanced visualisation, machine learning, natural language processing and optimisation. We want you to collaborate with product managers, data scientists, UX designers, software developers, analysts, people leaders and business partners to start getting live data pipelines as new services are being built, and begin delivering advanced analytics products through these services.

We are seeking an innovative and technically strong advanced analytics analyst with a background in optimisation, machine learning, and statistical modelling/analysis. This role requires a team member to have strong quantitative modelling skills and the ability to apply optimisation/statistical/machine learning methods to complex decision-making problems, with data coming from various data sources.  The key responsibilities for the role are:

  • Build decision-making models and propose solutions that you/your team has defined.  Conduct written and verbal presentations to share insights and recommendations to audiences of varying levels of technical sophistication.
  • Utilize code (Python/R/SQL) for data analyzing and modeling algorithms. Embed trusted advanced analytics at the heart of Field Operations to improve critical decisions.
  • Discover and solve the problems that might prevent Field Operations achieving its goals by analysing large amounts of business data, defining new metrics and business cases, designing simulations and experiments, creating models, and collaborating with colleagues across product, technology, data enablement and operations to exploit our data for statistical analysis, prediction, clustering, and machine learning.
  • Work with large, complex data sets. Solve difficult, non-routine analysis problems, applying advanced analytical methods as needed. Conduct analysis that includes data gathering and requirements specification, processing, analysis, ongoing deliverables, and presentations.
  • Build and prototype analysis pipelines iteratively to provide insights at scale. Develop comprehensive knowledge of Field Operations data structures and metrics, advocating for changes where needed for better customer and business outcomes.
  • Interact cross-functionally, making business recommendations (e.g., cost-benefit, forecasting, experiment analysis) with effective presentations of findings at multiple levels of stakeholders through visual displays of quantitative information.
  • Research and develop analysis, forecasting, and optimization methods to improve the quality of Google's user facing products.
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy data pipelines, machine learning and front-line facing products and services that enable Field Operations to be more effective and efficient.
  • Build a backlog, present release plans, develop business cases, and act as an interface for your team with stakeholders.
  • Make raw data usable, owning data quality for wrangled data and piecing together data according to the required format and understanding the business context of data.
  • Ensure all solutions exhibit high levels of performance, security, scalability, maintainability, and appropriate reusability and reliability upon deployment

Do I have what it takes?

  • This role would suit somebody who has a real positive attitude and who is easily able to connect and interact with people and operate as part of an already successful team.
  • Strong knowledge of data science (e.g. machine learning and natural language processing) and a track record of leading teams to deliver data science products into production in an agile way
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem solving aligned with organisational goals, with ability to identify opportunities for data innovation and promoting adoption and learning of new tools and techniques where appropriate.
  • Proven ability to develop capability of a team to tackle real-world business problems using a broad range of advanced analytical techniques.
  • Ability to tell the story to technical and non-technical stakeholders, and have success working with diverse stakeholder groups to deliver advanced analytics products.

Diverse teams are the best teams

We’re keen to meet people with varied backgrounds: the more inclusive we are the better our work will be. We want to build a team which represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills, and we decide employment on the basis of merit and potential. We understand some people may not apply to jobs unless they tick every box. And we know 'normal' office hours don't work for everyone, so we're open to discussing flexible working requests. If you're excited about joining us and think you have much of what we're looking for, even if you're not 100% sure… we'd love to hear from you.
