Job Description

OVERVIEW

We are actively seeking an interdisciplinary Autonomous Systems and Sensor Hardware Manager to join our multi-disciplinary Research & Development team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the mechanical design strategy of complex automated systems, including the design of structures, motion transmission systems, and mobile robot platforms with 10+ Degrees of freedom. This position will develop sensors solutions and hardware systems that facilitate our agricultural and soil organic carbon research. The successful candidate will work closely with other members of the R&D team, including Scientists, Software, Machine Learning, and Robotics Engineers.

YOUR MISSION

To the lead the strategy, design, and development of state-of-art electro-mechanical robotic systems to optimize R&D lab operations.   

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop and execute the strategy of mechanical design of complex autonomous vehicles and systems
  • Coach a team of multi-skilled engineers to ensure job performance and professional development are in parallel
  • Lead the design and implementation of automation platforms for autonomous vehicle operations (picture drones flying up in the air or rovers propelling on the ground) 
  • Continuously explore new methodologies and best practices to be applied in Company’s R&D operations
  • Lead and design, prototype, and test rugged mechanical systems to integrate with microcontrollers, sensors in harsh agricultural environments.
  • Oversee the fabrication of 3D parts and assemblies
  • Keep our 3D design methods up to date with the cutting edge in design software and fabrication methods
  • Contribute and maintain the process and operational procedures for the engineering team
  • Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • 15+ years of experience in mechanical design, optical design, and engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in a managerial role, preferably in a research & development setting
  • Successful track record of working on a research project from concept to delivery of novel mechanical solutions for complex robotics systems and electric vehicles
  • Proven experience working with electrical systems and battery packs constraints for high power systems.
  • Experience with Hydrogen Fuel Cell design and concepts
  • Strong structural analysis skills
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling applied to topology optimization and DFM analysis of parts for strength, mass, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Solid understanding of dynamics and kinetics in mechanical systems
  • Strong knowledge of optical design constraints for Robotics sensors manufacturing.
  • Expert-level knowledge of tolerancing and GD&T
  • Knowledge of machining techniques and safety risks
  • Experience assembling and integrating motion transmission components such as shafts, couplers, gearboxes, timing belts, chains, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of optimization for energy density, efficiency, and mass amid tight packaging and time constraints.
  • Proven ability to rapidly prototype mechanical systems
  • Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering documents
  • Sound capabilities in performing research on best practices and making it consumable for other team members
  • Experience with developing and maintaining design documentation throughout a product’s lifecycle

PREFERENCES

  • Experience with design in Ordered and Synchronous mode (Solid Edge)
  • Experience with AutoCAD
  • Fluent with MATLAB
  • Portfolio of completed projects available for review
