Job Description

Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of IT, the IT Systems Manager oversees the evaluation, acquisition, setup, administration, upgrade, and ongoing support and maintenance of all IT systems used by the Activate community. These systems include networks, hardware devices, installed software (MS Office, Slack, Zoom, etc.) and internet-based solutions (Google Workspace, Airtable, Calendly, Alchemer, Zapier, etc.). The IT Systems Manager also designs and creates communication and collaboration solutions using these tools and best-practice integrations between them.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Evaluate current IT systems and recommend enhancements, upgrades, or alternative tools

  • Administer access to key IT systems: users, roles, groups, permissions, and on-/off-boarding Activate staff 

  • Document best practices for key IT systems

  • Design and implement best-practice integrations between key IT systems

  • Monitor and secure networks at in-person office locations

  • Research new/upgraded tools and plan for their use within the organization

  • Provide end-user support for computers, mobile devices, and software applications (installed and web-based)

  • Preserve hardware and data assets by creating disaster mitigation and recovery plans

The Ideal Candidate ...

  • Has a minimum of 5 years of experience working in network and/or systems administration

  • Has a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or other relevant fields

  • Has administered at least one common web-based collaboration platform (Google Workspace, Slack, and/or Asana strongly preferred)

  • Has a background in designing IT solutions and planning their implementation, testing, documentation, and rollout/training

  • Can plan and coordinate complex IT projects across multiple functional groups

  • Has excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities

  • Can produce clear technical writing for non-technical audiences

  • Understands technical governance, compliance, and data security

  • Is comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced, growth-oriented organization

  • Is detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and follow through on projects

  • Can design and deliver solutions for a wide variety of audiences

  • Has outstanding communication and interpersonal skills

  • Is willing to be scrappy, experiment constantly, and learn from failures

  • Believes in the power of science innovation to combat climate change and create a sustainable, resilient, equitable global economy

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and a comprehensive suite of benefit offerings. This position may be remote or aligned to either of Activate's Berkeley, CA or Boston, MA offices.
