Every day, Trading works to secure the best possible energy cost for our members. We do this through using our wholesale market expertise to make good trading decisions. Through developing a within day power trading capability, we are looking to expand this into the within day market, which we believe will be crucial for our customers in the future. As our customers begin to generate electricity from solar, store energy in home batteries and charge their electric cars, we believe being active in the within-day power market is important for the future.  

This role in a nutshell:

Using your energy trading prowess, at the forefront of delivering the £m targets of our dynamic Energy department will be your goal. You will lead the development of our brand new within day trading desk, ultimately using this new capability to optimize OVO’s power balancing activities and deliver P&L growth. 

With your expertise in UK Power markets and global energy trends, you'll make data-driven decisions and enhance a brand-new value opportunity for OVO.You will work with our tech and data science teams to build out a new analytical capability for OVO which will advise your trading decisions.  

Expectations will be to hit £m P&L targets through optimizing our large within day power positions as well as taking calculated risks to generate additional value.

Your key outcomes will be:

• Delivery of a brand new within day power trading capability (currently in development)
• Crafting an annual £m benefit versus existing costs and targets 
• Developing others in the team to support and cover your portfolio. 

Within your first few months month you’ll:

• Have delivered an initial EPEX trading setup and drove OVO’s first within day power trades. 
• Have worked with our portfolio management team to deliver a book structure, risk and P&L reporting suite.
• Developed a detailed plan to build a groundbreaking analytical toolkit.

Systems: BMRS data, our ETRM system, Reporting tools like Tableau, SQL, Python

You’ll be a successful Senior Short Term Power Trader at OVO if you…

• Boast a proven track record as an Energy Trading professional in UK Power markets.
• Command extensive proven experience across UK Wholesale Power and Gas Markets, coupled with a deep understanding of the global energy landscape.
• Showcase an impressive history of contributing through astute trading, particularly in optimizing Power balancing activities.
• Demonstrate competence in cross-functional teamwork, delivering successful projects in partnership with diverse teams.
• Possess a flair for innovative thinking, thriving on direct responsibility and consistently delivering tangible value.
• Exhibit the capability to own and implement critical business processes with unwavering precision and adaptability.
• Display a keen eye for critical analysis, effectively interrogating model outputs and providing valuable feedback for continuous improvement and heightened accuracy.
• Excel in interpersonal and communication skills, effectively presenting clear recommendations, and swiftly responding with conclusive actions.
• Show a dedication to supporting and nurturing the growth of fellow traders and analysts within the Trading domain.

We’ll pay you between £70,000 and £90,000, depending on your specific skills and experience. If your expectations are a little different, have a chat with us!

You’ll be eligible for an on-target bonus of 15%. We have one OVO bonus plan that focuses on the collective performance of our people to deliver our Plan Zero goal.
