Job Description

Team Charter: The NIO Vehicle Safety and Compliance Team is responsible for defining safety standards and requirements and ensuring safety assurance and compliance across NIO’s mass-produced fleet of Luxury, Intelligent, Autonomous Vehicles. Collaborating closely with all internal and external teams, organizations and agencies around the globe, the NIO Vehicle Safety and Compliance Team‘s mission is to ensure safety assurance and compliance while also innovating next-generation vehicles and make it happen on mass-produced vehicles.  
About the Role: NIO is seeking a Sr. Staff or Principal Safety Standards and Compliance Engineer for its North American R&D Center. Reporting to the Chief Safety and Compliance Engineer, the Safety Standards Engineer will define, develop, and deliver appropriate safety standards, guidelines, industry best practices and due-care requirements to support Safety Assurance and Compliance across NIO’s fleet of vehicles worldwide. You will also represent NIO in external Standard Developing Organizations and working groups to contribute to the development of safety standards and best practices. This position can be based in San Jose, CA, Seattle, WA or Boise, ID.  

Responsibilities:

  • Review and summarize existing industry safety standards, regulations, guidelines, and best practices and related activities applicable to the safety of Vehicles including Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS), Autonomous Vehicles (AV) and Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • Monitor development of safety standards, guidelines, and best practice activities, and provide updates, and explain to NIO’s internal stakeholders
  • Develop internal due-care requirements related to safety of Vehicles, ADAS, ADS and AV
  • Represent NIO in external engagements including with regulatory agencies, standards developing organizations and other appropriate forums
  • Lead NIO internal activities to extract, develop and propose safety requirements from relevant safety standards, regulations, guidelines, and best practices
  • Interpret and explain safety requirements to appropriate cross-functional teams, lead and help with documentation, approval, and release process
  • Develop and deliver trainings for safety standards, requirements and legal updates from regulatory bodies and other relevant organizations

Requirements:

  • Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, and others), Computer Science, Robotics, or related technical field
  • 5-10 years automotive industry safety standards experience, preferably at OEM, Tier 1 supplier, or Standards Organizations
  • Deep experience and understanding of existing vehicle safety standards, e.g., FMVSS, ECE, US NCAP, Euro NCAP, IIHS, ISO (26262, 21448 and others), SAE, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of existing and developing safety standards for ADAS, ADS and AV, e.g., NHTSA AV Guidelines, SAE, AVSC, IEEE and others
  • Experience participating in industry standards developing organizations, committees, and working groups
  • Experience extracting safety requirements from applicable safety standards and regulations
  • Hands on experiences applying relevant safety standards in product development and engineering
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of safety compliance assessment process and methods
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, especially the ability to communicate complex engineering issues to a diverse global team
  • Product safety investigation and analysis related experience in Vehicle safety, ADAS, AV and ADS technologies is desired
  • Mandarin language skills (speaking and writing) are a plus
