Job Description

OVERVIEW

We are seeking talented engineers to join our Research & Development team as Machine Learning Engineers with various specializations.  We are working on ambitious projects to augment our lab personnel with machine vision platforms to speed up our scientific work, as well as build imaging systems for a variety of contexts – both indoor and outdoor.  Our work applies machine learning to the fields of plant health, computational chemistry, soil analysis, and remote sensing using drone and satellite data. The Machine Learning Engineers will work closely with our Robotics and Software Engineers to help process images to develop machine learning models that accelerate our scientific experimentation.

YOUR MISSION

To support our work in machine learning broadly, we’re looking for generalists and specialists.  Candidates with strong computer vision backgrounds will be applying classical and deep learning techniques to facilitate our advanced bioscience research.  If you have a background in soil science or remote sensing, we’ll need your expertise to model soil carbon across Canada.  Is your experience in graph networks or sequential modelling?  If so, you’ll work with our computational chemists to speed up modelling and optimize molecules for use in our products.  Are you more of a generalist?  You’ll get to work across multiple domains and help out Terramera as a whole.  Please be sure to note the fields you’re particularly experienced in using the checkboxes in the application below.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Research and help develop machine learning/deep learning models for a variety of tasks depending on your skills, background, and what Terramera needs
  • Support the implementation of automated processing pipelines for large datasets
  • Collaborate with our Software and Machine Learning Engineers to put your models and algorithms into production

REQUIREMENTS

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Engineering/Computer Science, or an equivalent combination of experience and knowledge
  • 2+ years of experience in applying machine learning and deep learning concepts to real-world problems
  • Experience coding on a team and working collaboratively with other engineers
  • Familiarity with deep learning network architectures (e.g. convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, single shot detectors) and frameworks (e.g. Tensorflow and PyTorch)
  • Solid programming skills with a focus on writing clean/maintainable code with experience in Python (strongly preferred), Java, or C++ programming
  • Strong analytical ability and mathematical skills
  • Matured communication and critical thinking ability to influence and propose analytics strategies that challenge status quo thinking

PREFERENCES

  • Portfolio of completed machine learning projects/papers available for review
  • Experience applying computer vision techniques to high-resolution images
  • Experience in biology, chemistry, soil science, and/or remote sensing
  • Experience with active learning, uncertainty modelling, and/or Bayesian neural networks
  • Experience applying machine learning techniques to massive datasets
  • Experience with MLOps and/or Data Engineering tools and frameworks
  • Exposure to imaging system components (sensors, optics, lighting)
  • Knowledge of the Agile project management methodology

QUALITIES WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Aptitude for interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Highly conscientious with strong follow-through
  • Capable of performing research on best practices and communicating results to a non-expert audience
  • Able to apply domain knowledge to ambiguous and novel situations

LOCATION

  • This position is remote based in Vancouver, BC.
