Job Description

We’re looking for an experienced Process Engineer to elevate our team’s skill set and help us drive climate innovation forward!

  • Location: Uusimaa, Finland or ability to travel there frequently
  • Travel: up to 40% (initially to our California plant, later on-site on other locations)
  • Application deadline: Aug 18, 2021 via email
  • Start date: As soon as possible

Carbo Culture is a Finnish biotechnology startup commercialising large-scale carbon removal. Our north star aim is to remove 1 billion tons (1Gt) of CO2e from the atmosphere annually. To do this, we combine nature and technology to convert biomass into a stable, functional biocarbon form that will remove carbon from the atmosphere for over 1000 years.

Why Carbon Removal?

By 2050, the whole world will likely need to remove up to 10Gt of carbon dioxide annually to remain below 1.5c warming, and Carbo Culture’s ambition is to be a central part of that effort.

Our technologically advanced, patented solution is market ready. We’ve proven our technology at demo scale and are now embarking on a path to rapid scaling and expansion. We build and run factories which lock carbon dioxide into a stable form of biochar for thousands of years. We sell biochar products, CO2 removal credits and the excess renewable heat generated as a by-product.

Join an early-stage team with ambition

Our global team is backed by the best investors and partners in Europe and the US, and we’re now looking for our second in-house process engineer to help us scale-up the technology and the company.

Carbo Culture’s initial R&D site is located in Central Valley, California. As a part of your role, you will help improve our current production process in California, and transfer your learnings to the technology scale-up in Finland. This role requires travel to California for up to several months at a time, and in 2022-23 presence at our Finland based first commercial site. Later on we anticipate global travelling with the engineering team.

You have a background and demonstrated history in developing new production processes, ideally in a fast-paced environment, and have worked in related fields such as refining, biofuel production or activated carbon production. Experience with a production technology startup is a plus.

Your role

  • You will be the process owner of our company, and work closely with the CTO and technical leadership
  • Your responsibility is to ensure that knowledge from the R&D team gets translated into deployment
  • You will be responsible on system design and implementation of our first scale-up with our technical project lead
  • You’ll be the startup manager for the process, working with our (project execution) team and an EPCM contractor
  • You’ll be responsible for making an operating manual, training the facility staff and handover of the production unit to client
  • Document all process related knowledge and design improvements
  • Help improve the process and system design at our test site in CA, and assist in scale-up testing
  • Transfer your process safety knowledge into project implementation and ability to be responsible for HAZOP related issues

Your background

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in Process Engineering
  • 5-10 years (or more) of experience in process engineering: On-site experience of running systems (knowledge in safety and interdependencies)
  • You’ve been on the engineering team of a commercial system in Europe and understand the safety measures required by law
  • You have excellent process design skills and implementation experience
  • You’ve built production plants before and are confident in your ability to manage complexity and have a strong understanding of thermodynamic principles.
  • Fluent, excellent written and oral English
  • Data collection and interpretation experience with common analysis tools
  • You are a proficient user of process control systems, like Wonderware, ABB, Valmet DNA, Honeywell etc, as well as engineering tools, like ACAD, Vertex etc.
  • Experience in pyrolysis process would be an added benefit

What we look for in team members

  • You’re eager to join a venture-funded startup with a fast pace
  • You’re someone who your teammates can be proud of working with
  • You take ownership
  • You’re able to work with a distributed team - some of your team members are based in California, and you might have 1-3 evening calls due to time zones
  • You’re open to travelling for projects
  • It’s of high personal importance to you to get to work on mitigating climate change

We are offering the opportunity to work on the world's biggest problem. You will get to work on climate tech in Finland / Europe - a very rare chance; professionally working in an emerging, dynamic field and a company with global ambitions to be the best in the world. Our core technology is proven, novel and just makes a lot of sense but there are still lots of challenges to solve on its way to fullscale, so it won't be boring in any way!

You will be either based in Uusimaa, Finland or able to travel there frequently (on a monthly basis) as well as able to travel to our demo site in California. We provide relocation support for international candidates.

Sounds interesting? Great! Send us your Resume and Cover Letter as soon as possible (by latest 18.8.) via email to: jobs@carboculture.com (please use “Carbo Culture: Process Owner” as a subject heading). We look forward to hearing about your previous experience as well as expectations.
