Job Description

Team Charter:
The NIO Vehicle Safety and Compliance Team is responsible for defining safety standards and requirements and ensuring safety assurance and compliance across NIO’s mass-produced fleet of Luxury, Intelligent, Autonomous Vehicles.  Collaborating closely with all internal and external teams, organizations and agencies around the globe, the NIO Vehicle Safety and Compliance Team‘s mission is to ensure safety assurance and compliance while also innovating next-generation vehicles and make it happen on mass-produced vehicles. About the Role:
NIO is seeking a Sr. Staff Software Safety Assurance Engineer for its North American R&D Center. Reporting to the Chief Safety and Compliance Engineer, you will take a lead role to review and validate complex software systems to ensure safety. You will work to deliver autonomous driving software meeting safety goals in presence of faults, failure, and limitations. You will help develop robust and safe software product by working cross-functionally and closely with software and other teams across NIO. Your contributions will help establish NIO’s Safety and Compliance Program to ensure safety across NIO’s fleet of vehicles worldwide. In this role, you will advise all internal stakeholders across NIO and leadership to deliver robust software to achieve safety goals.  This position can be based in San Jose, CA, Seattle, WA or Boise, ID. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop safety goals and derive technical safety requirements for software systems
  • Review and validate complex software systems to ensure safety
  • Ensure software meeting safety goals in presence of faults, failures, and limitations
  • Define safety test, verification, and validation plans for software product, system, and actions
  • Work closely and collaborate with software teams to identify safety mechanisms, architectures, and improvements
  • Define and deliver software safety assurance and compliance program with risk assessment and mitigation plans
  • Compile and deliver required evidence to develop NIO’s safety case in your area of expertise and responsibility
  • Conduct internal compliance reviews and efforts to validate NIO’s safety case by assessing evidence
  • Deliver successful completion of NIO’s safety case
  • Ensure safety assurance by continuously assessing on-going compliance
  • Perform appropriate safety-critical audits, reviews, and compliance assessments
  • Document findings, recommend improvements, discuss with related teams to ensure continuous improvement and compliance
  • Liaise with and provide status updates to stakeholders and leadership

Requirements:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering (Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace and others), or related technical field
  • Working knowledge of C++, Python, and relevant coding standards
  • 5-10 years of software engineering experience in automotive (or in a safety-critical industry, e.g., transportation, aerospace, nuclear, chemical, etc.) preferably at OEM, Tier 1 supplier, or product certification organization
  • Demonstrated expertise in development, integration, debugging, and testing of safety critical embedded systems with compliance to ISO 26262, ISO 21448, UL 4600, others and equivalent
  • In-depth knowledge and expert level expertise and experience on various software hazard analysis methods and HARA work products, e.g., SW-FMEA, SW-FTA, etc.
  • Expertise and experience in identifying and analyzing software systems and components for failures, e.g., single point, latent and others
  • Knowledge and experience with software test automation, fault injection testing, and diagnostic coverage and analysis
  • Experience with HIL testing and working with products using RTOS
  • Strong background and experience with modern software engineering practices
  • Experience extracting safety requirements from applicable safety standards and regulation
  • Systems engineering fundamentals, especially how it relates to hardware, software, system and sub-system level design and engineering
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, especially the ability to communicate complex engineering issues to a diverse global team
  • Mandarin language skills (speaking and writing) are a plus
