We’re seeking a Senior Scientist II to develop and optimize new formulations for current and future Apeel product offerings and characterize them to develop a mechanistic understanding of performance. You will work cross functionally with other R&D teams as well as Operations teams in developing a product from discovery to launch. The ideal candidate will be an expert in formulations and colloids and have a demonstrated history of developing new materials and characterizing material performance.

This role may require up to 5-10% travel (domestic and international).

What You’ll Do

  • Develop novel formulations and processes related to emulsion and other colloidal technologies as needed to deliver actives and other materials
  • Develop new colloidal characterization methods to appraise product properties, performance, stability, and viability
  • Design and execute experiments to identify drivers of performance and optimize formulations for use in current and future Apeel product offerings
  • Manage and interpret research data to disseminate them as either white papers, technical presentations, or creation of SOP documentation to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Collaborate with the Materials Sciences team, other R&D teams and Operations team to ensure knowledge transfer and quality control of product performance
  • Lead project teams to collect data and define technical criteria required for successful scale up of formulations from discovery to commercialization
  • Keep up-to-date on prior and current literature associated with the formulations and be able to efficiently disseminate major results and findings to the team
  • Demonstrate a commitment to workplace safety through adherence to corporate safety policies

What You Bring

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry with a focus on Material Development and Characterization
  • 3-5 years of full time, postdoc experience in formulation development
  • Ability to perform indoor and outdoor work in cold or hot environments, and the ability to lift and move boxes of fruit (up to 50 lbs)
  • Experience in characterizing material systems with a variety of techniques, including microscopic techniques (i.e. X-ray scattering, electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering) and macroscopic techniques (i.e. rheometry, calorimetry, spectrophotometry)
  • In-depth understanding and working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and/or Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • A proven track record of research excellence, as demonstrated by an extensive publication and presentation record
  • A commitment to workplace and laboratory safety
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working in diverse, interdisciplinary teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in formulation development for agricultural, food, consumer goods, pharmaceutical or similar sectors
  • A demonstrated commitment to learning and mentorship
