Job Description

Company

Cloud to Street is the recognized authority on using satellites and AI to track floods anywhere on earth. Founded by two climate experts with initial funding from Google, the team comes from NASA, Facebook, Google, Willis Towers Watson, and Oscar Insurance. Our platform has been used by 18 countries to fill critical information gaps for disaster planning and response, and is the official emergency flood mapping provider to the United Nations. The technology is now enabling insurers to expand protection to billions of uninsured assets and people through partnerships with Munich Re and Willis Towers Watson. We recently raised a large seed from top investors that will be announced soon.

Role

As remote sensing analyst you will apply your geospatial talents toward reducing the impact of flooding in low and middle-income countries. In this role, you will take deep ownership over being the first line of defense for validating spatial flood data from our platform, and report flood risks to users in a digestible and actionable way. You will work closely with our remote sensing scientists and project managers to improve Cloud to Street’s near real-time flood monitoring product to support global disaster risk reduction.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor active flood events for ongoing Cloud to Street projects, validate and QA/QC satellite-based flood maps delivered to humanitarian users
  • Work collaboratively with remote sensing scientists to validate and improve Cloud to Street’s flood products and science benchmarks
  • Prepare visual and statistical reports on flooding situations to be used by government users in low and middle-income countries for disaster response
  • Scope the viability of potential flood mapping projects by collecting and analyzing historical environmental and remotely sensed data
  • Troubleshoot code and document issues in our internal automated flood mapping systems

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, earth science, atmospheric science, engineering, computer science, or a related field with a focus on remote sensing and/or geospatial analysis
  • Eager to learn new skills in remote sensing, hydrology, and UX
  • Hands-on experience in remote sensing principles and methods
  • Demonstrated ability in producing maps, coding visual data, and/or formatting summary reports
  • Commitment to justice, diversity, science, and solidarity with vulnerable communities
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively with a scrappy startup mentality

Useful Experience

Our ideal candidate brings most of these experiences, but we expect most of our candidates may have particular strengths or experiences with one area more than another

  • Familiarity with Google Earth Engine Javascript and/or Python APIs
  • Experience with QGIS or comparable GIS software
  • Basic proficiency in Python, JavaScript, or R
  • Familiarity with data science methods and techniques
  • Past projects assessing accuracy of or quality controlling geospatial data sets
  • Exposure to any of the following: meteorological and/or climate data, change-detection, hydrology and physical-based flood models

This position will ideally be based out of New York City. Remote work is possible for the right candidate (from Eastern to Pacific time zones).

Applications will be open until the position is filled, with the goal of hiring the right candidate as soon as possible.
