Full time role Engineering: Mechanical

Job Description

Verne is a Berkeley-Stanford startup developing novel high-density, low-cost hydrogen storage systems and related technologies for heavy-duty trucking. Our technology will accelerate the transition of the global heavy-duty transportation industry away from diesel fuel to zero-emissions green hydrogen. Our new onboard storage technology reduces the cost, weight, and volume of hydrogen storage by 50%, and makes it even safer than existing storage solutions. These characteristics allow trucks to carry a higher payload or travel double the distance before refueling. Successful deployment of our technology into the heavy-duty truck market is expected to lead to future expansions into the maritime and aviation industries. We are building a world-class engineering team to accelerate the decarbonization of the heavy-duty industry. We are supported by advisors at Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and Berkeley, and have funding from Stanford, MIT, Caltech, the National Science Foundation, and leading climate-tech angel investors.

What you’ll do:

As Head of Hydrogen Storage, you will lead the engineering development of our high-density storage systems, becoming a core technical leader at Verne. Specifically, you will lead the following areas of Verne’s storage business:

R&D: Innovation and Early Deployment

  • Develop our storage system product roadmap: innovation, design, and development
  • Lead the design of our next generation tanks, including optimizing system volumetric and gravimetric hydrogen capacities, and manufacturability at-scale
  • Implement structural, dynamic, and thermal analysis on storage tank designs (e.g., fatigue cycle life analysis), including detailed analysis and modeling
  • Support the development of our storage system product roadmap: innovation, design, and development
  • Support the establishment of our prototyping, testing, and optimization methodology for our tank R&D program
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of Verne’s portfolio of intellectual property

Operations: Product Manufacturing and Development

  • Advance our storage system product manufacturing strategy, and refine it based on Verne’s R&D innovations
  • Lead the development of our manufacturing line for hydrogen storage products
  • Develop and support our product certification processes to prepare for product launches in North America and Europe

Technical Leadership

  • Support the CTO as he leads the growth and development of Verne engineers, including junior engineers and world-class hydrogen storage experts
  • Champion a culture of safety and high-quality work across design, development, and implementation

Key qualifications:

  • Background in mechanical engineering, M.S. or beyond
  • 5+ years of industry experience with computer-aided design, stress analysis, prototyping, and manufacturing
  • 5+ years overseeing and managing complex product development projects, with attention to detail, quality, and safety
  • Excellent leader, listener, and team player
  • Extensive experience with Solidworks, Ansys Fluent, Matlab, and Abaqus
  • Interest in entrepreneurship and leading engineering for a growing early-stage startup
  • Passion for driving large-scale decarbonization and a desire to be at the forefront of the global efforts to combat climate change

Compensation and benefits:

  • Competitive salary and equity incentives
  • Medical and dental insurance
  • Flexible hours & paid time off
  • Join a collaborative and passionate team
  • The opportunity to shape the rapidly growing green hydrogen industry
  • The opportunity to work closely with leading transportation decarbonization partners
