Job Description

Terraformation is hiring two (2) full-time Carbon Certification Strategists to work with our business development team to provide technical expertise in strengthening our value proposition in the voluntary carbon offset markets, and collaborating with our forestry team.
Terraformation’s overall mission is to accelerate appropriate reforestation at mass scale and speed to reverse the current climate crisis trends. The Carbon Certification Strategists will play a critical role in support of our mission by:
Coordinating and developing carbon offset projects that support the restoration of native forests.
One role will be located in or near London (BST/UTC+1), and the other in or near Honolulu (HST/UTC-10). The successful candidates must have the ability to regularly attend calls and meet deliverable deadlines that align with their respective time zones, as well as those of Terraformation’s stakeholders and partners.
This position reports to the Global Head of Business Development.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise to design and develop voluntary carbon offset projects that stand up to rigorous certification standards
  • Cooperatively develop a standardized system for creating and maintaining carbon projects
  • Work closely with Terraformation’s forestry carbon scientists who ensure emissions removals are correctly calculated 
  • Write voluntary carbon credit technical reports based on AFOLU methodologies following VCS or comparable guidelines
  • Gather relevant data and documentation through desk top research, and site visits where necessary
  • Act as the focal point to Terraformation’s business development team for certification processes, modeling, and reports
  • Work closely with the carbon certification bodies and provide strategic council to our forest project teams on where best to submit each project for certification
  • Develop a deep expertise on carbon certification today in each market and jurisdiction and also trends in approaches to certification in the future
  • Develop an expertise in credits for other types of emerging certification for ecosystem services beyond carbon credits
  • Work closely with Terraformation’s partners and landowners
  • Work closely with Terraformation’s carbon offsets and forestry sponsorship sales team to present each of our projects in an accurate and compelling manner
  • Resolve on-the-ground issues as well as build and maintain relationships

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in forestry, environmental sciences, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience with voluntary carbon offsetting projects (preferably VCS)
  • Working knowledge all carbon accreditation bodies
  • Experience in forest carbon assessment
  • Experience with Google Suite tools
  • Detail oriented, flexible, and reliable work ethic
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong personal management, planning, and collaboration skills
  • Passion to solve the climate crisis
  • Valid driver's license

Ideal Qualifications:

  • On the ground experience in forestry and restoration work
  • Experience with GIS and/or remote sensing data processing and analyses (spaceborne,  airborne, multispectral, LiDaR, Radar, etc.)
  • Experience in R, Python, and other programming languages
  • Understanding of the drivers and mechanics of climate change, sources of greenhouse gases, carbon, and energy
  • Ability to speak a second language (or multiple languages)
