Job Description

Form Energy is a team of passionate people tackling the challenge of climate change through transformationally low cost energy storage. Our team members are active learners who enjoy working on tough technology problems in massive markets and embody our values of humanity, excellence and creativity. The company is backed by a diverse set of committed investors and we have raised over $360M to date.Role Description We are seeking an experienced experimental scientist to join the electrolyte team at Form Energy. The electrolyte team drives performance improvement across all electrodes. The ideal candidate will dive into hands-on lab work, using electrochemical, analytical and materials characterization techniques to assess, understand, and improve electrolyte formulations for full cell performance. Electrochemical techniques include electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiostatic or galvanostatic cycling. Analytical techniques include titration and mass spectroscopy (ex. GC/MS, ICP-MS). Materials characterization techniques include x-ray diffraction and microscopy (ex. optical, SEM). This role will focus on closing performance gaps through hypothesis-driven testing, systematic root cause analyses, and creative mitigation strategy development. The candidate will work closely with chemical, materials, and mechanical engineers on the technology development team. This candidate is creative, safety-conscious, and works with attention to details, to documentation, and to learning.

What You'll Do:

  • Design and execute experiments to understand and refine existing electrolyte formulations
  • Characterize cells and individual components using solution-based or materials characterization techniques in order to build our mechanistic understanding of the system
  • Develop a deep understanding of process-property-performance relationships in our material system, using internal testing resources and external analytical laboratories
  • Work with materials engineers, chemical engineers, electrochemists, and a team of technicians to disseminate learnings and integrate changes to formulations across the technical team
  • Develop new electrochemical testing and characterization pipelines as necessary to accelerate cycles of learning toward mitigating component underperformance
  • Propose new directions for component development while considering potential trade-offs with other key components of the energy storage system
  • Use JMP and python scripts to quantitatively analyze and visualize data

What You'll Bring:

  • MS + 3-5 years industrial experience or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
  • Demonstrated success in developing a mechanistic understanding of process-property-performance relationships for the purpose of engineering material systems
  • Experience with electrochemical testing and analytical or materials characterization of complex systems
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams
