Job Description

WHO YOU ARE

You are an experienced, hands-on mechanical engineer with an aptitude for learning new things and completing big, complex projects for a manufacturing environment. In your work on the Equipment team, you will design, build, and test integrated systems for our next-generation battery material factories. You take ownership of your responsibilities from early concept through validation and handoff, while thoroughly documenting your work every step of the way. You have excellent communication skills and are able to collaborate seamlessly with internal teammates and external vendors to build Sila’s future.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external vendors to design facility-wide systems and subsystems for scaled-up battery material production. Scope includes mechanical, automation, chemical, plumbing, and safety systems.
  • Deploy and bring hardware online, from an empty facility to production handoff. When things break, dig deep to find and permanently resolve the root cause.
  • Develop and perform or manage robust unit tests on systems you’ve created.
  • Generate detailed documentation of your designs and commissioning activity.
  • Gather feedback from end-users of your work and distill into actionable modifications. Iterate.
  • Engage with a range of external parties (contractors, equipment OEMs, consultants) and manage complex technical procurements to success.
  • Ensure designs and installations maintain compliance with applicable regulations, permits, and internal policies.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 6+ years of industry experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree)
  • Experience building and deploying capital equipment for uptime-sensitive manufacturing applications
  • Expertise at designing mechanical parts/assemblies and generating drawings (SolidWorks and AutoCAD preferred)
  • Strong mechanical intuition and working knowledge of field-deployed electronics, sensors, and actuators
  • Experience generating outward-facing document packages and working with vendors to get things built
  • Ability to quickly research and understand applicable codes and regulations
  • Experience with material handling systems (especially powder handling) in manufacturing applications would be nice

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and safety shoes
  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection when required
  • Move items up to 50 lbs with the assistance of lift equipment and carts
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building)
  • Can travel both domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time
