unu is an urban mobility brand based in Berlin. Our first product was the unu Scooter Classic, an electric scooter with portable batteries launched in 2014. Our products are sold both directly to consumers and business customers, making them accessible to everyone and resulting in fair prices by eluding dealership costs. In 2020, we launched the second generation of our scooter: The unu Scooter was designed in house and completely re-designed with our partners in Germany. The new scooter offers space for two people, as well as the largest storage space and one of the fastest acceleration values in the electric scooter segment.
After establishing a strong footprint in Germany, Austria and France, we are looking to consolidate our position as one of Europe's leading e-mobility brands. With already more than 70 creative, pragmatic and solution oriented team members, we are now looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (m/w/d) to join the team in unu’s headquarter in Berlin.
The Role
You will work with our young but highly talented Cloud Platform Engineering team, to further develop our existing APIs and cloud platform for data ingestion. Strategically we will bring new models to the market, and you will also play a key role in this.
Our drive for usability and design simplicity has established a unique vehicle brand in Germany, and a presence in Europe. You will be central in combining these principles with engineering excellence to bring astonishing products to the market.
We believe strongly in the people within our organisation, and a key part of the role will be to develop the team, allowing them to acquire not just practical but also personal skills.
As our organisation has grown we see a need to develop strong processes and structures, you will also be responsible for helping to establish these, and identifying the right tooling to make them work.

Your responsibilities

• As a senior in the team, you will support the team lead to continuously improve our cloud platform, bringing in new features, improving scalability, security, and reliability
• Our already diverse team will benefit from your experience and the viewpoints you bring to discussions and decision-making. Making a great team is a crucial step in making great projects.
• Our Cloud Platform is the essential layer connecting to both our E-Mopeds and users Apps. It provides a data aggregation layer for decision-making and analysis. You will collaborate with engineers and stakeholders from other teams.
• Building a successful team requires good collaboration with your team members. Code reviews and architecture analysis are a given, but we also expect seniors to mentor junior team members.
• The role of the creator brings great responsibility. You will be responsible for owning and maintaining the services you build, aided by our Site Reliability Engineers. We treat Accelerate (Humble, Kim, Forsgren 2018) as our north star.

What you bring

To get there we need you to bring:

• Broad experience (minimum five years) in diverse programming environments, with a strong focus on backend development.
• Ability to hold peer-to-peer conversations with embedded and/or app developers would be awesome
• Building Node.js services to handle millions of messages a month is not a concern for you - you are confident in your diligence and will sleep well at night.
• As our CI/CD Pipeline pushes code into the production environment in < 5 minutes, we need excellent testing. You know frameworks and techniques for all layers of the Testing Pyramid 
• Handling data is our primary task, you apply algorithmic thinking and a knowledge of various datastores to design the right systems
• When weighing up design choices, you are thinking in containers, but know when a monolithic approach could be a smarter option - you look forward to the discussion. 
• German language is not a requirement, but our need for good documentation and discussion brings the need for excellent English communication skills
• You will enjoy working with employees of many nations, genders and sexual orientation, and enhance the team with your own unique self.
