Job Description

Position Overview:

This is a contract position. As a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) auditor, you will work as a member of a team to assess a variety of fisheries against the MSC Fisheries Standard. The MSC Fisheries Standard aims to ensure that a fishery is well managed and responsibly harvested via its three core principles:

1) sustainable fish stocks;

2)  minimizing environmental impact; and

3) effective management.

This opportunity focuses on Principle 2, evaluating the environmental impact of fishing on the ecosystem, including habitat, protected species, and bycatch. In this role, you will review and interpret scientific information related to the impact of fisheries to score and assess their performance in line with the requirements of the MSC Fisheries Standard. You will also facilitate stakeholder consultation with scientists, conservation groups, fisheries management groups, and industry. This is a unique opportunity to work with a variety of different fisheries internationally and gain an in-depth understanding of the operations of certifications as a mechanism to improve sustainability.

Minimum Qualifications

  • University degree in fisheries, marine conservation biology, natural resources environmental management or relevant field (e.g. economics, mathematics, statistics), or 3 years’ management or research experience in marine conservation biology, fisheries, natural resources, or environmental management position
  • 3 years or more experience in research into, policy analysis for, or management of, the impact of fisheries on aquatic ecosystems including at least two of the following topics: i. Bycatch, ii. Endangered, threatened, or protected (ETP) species, iii. Habitats, or iv. Ecosystem interactions.
  • Pass the MSC’s fishery team member training course
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination required. Medical and religious accommodations will also be considered.
