Job Description

Who are we?

Sidewalk Labs is an urban innovation company that tackles cities' greatest challenges. We create products and solutions, invest in new companies, and help developers build more sustainable, innovative, and equitable places around the world. Our ambitious vision requires us to push ourselves beyond conventional thinking, and we work hard in pursuit of our mission. Our cross-disciplinary team consists of experts from real estate, urban planning, government, finance, technology, and engineering, among other backgrounds.

Our urban innovations include Delve (a generative design product that empowers real estate teams to design better, faster, with less risk), Mesa (an easy-install kit for commercial buildings that cuts energy costs, improves tenant comfort, and simplifies building operations), Pebble (a low-cost vehicle sensor to help manage parking and curb space), and Affordable Electrification (a new way to manage home energy use to meet a customer’s monthly budget). We're also developing an offsite construction company that can deliver high-quality mass timber buildings for more sustainable living and working.

With the potential to radically improve quality of life in cities for all, our work is both exciting and complex. We are working to achieve something unprecedented — help us build it!

What is the role?

In your role as a Senior Product Manager, you will be a key member of Sidewalk Labs’ product team, working on Affordable Electrification (AE), an early-stage product for utilities to keep energy costs low and predictable for residential customers today and throughout our global transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. The product includes a software platform with mobile apps and integrations with hardware and utility systems.

The role will involve deeply understanding market trends, competitors and customers in the utility residential energy management tech market; developing product roadmaps; establishing and applying frameworks for decision making; training and coaching our multidisciplinary team on product development processes; and most importantly, helping to build a product and business that scales to millions of users.

You will report to the Director of Sustainability, the lead for AE, and work hand in glove with AE’s design, engineering, and utility leads.

What you will achieve:

In your first month, you will:

  • Develop strong relationships within the team and learn each member’s role, skill set, and unique background.
  • Learn about work done so far in the pilot and the MVPs developed.
  • Become familiar with the utility partnership Sidewalk Labs is forming to build the product, and help ensure its market fit and suitability.
  • Learn Sidewalk Labs’ product development processes, norms, and expectations, and, along with the AE Senior Engineer, begin to block out the processes that will work best for our team.
  • Help shape and hone the product development schedule.

Within the first three months, you will:

  • Get a firm understanding of the product vision and what we have learned to date from the MVP and pilot.
  • Kickoff development of the AE V1 product, collaborating with engineering, design, and other members of our small, but growing team.
  • Get a firm understanding of the product vision and what we have learned to date from the MVP and pilot.
  • Support hiring of a UX Designer and software engineering team.

Beyond three months, you will:

  • Lead product development, working with our partners and stakeholders, and preparing for deployment to utility customers.
  • Develop and manage relationships with OEMs to which our software is integrated.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • You have a strong background in product management for software teams.
  • You have a track record shipping world-class products, ideally across multiple domains from concept to launch.
  • You have a deep understanding of the product development process, including defining a product strategy and roadmap to align with budget and revenue; delivering Market and Product Requirements Documents that prioritize features; and ensuring market delivery on time and on budget.
  • Your product strategies are driven by market demand and business cases, data and user research interviews, surveys, and observational methodologies.
  • You can work with other product, business, and sales leads to set pricing to meet revenue and profitability goals, deliver forecasts, develop sales tools and collateral, and propose overall budgets to ensure success.
  • You work closely and collaboratively with other project domains (product, software, design and business development) in a way that aligns goals and expectations across the business unit.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and explain technical concepts, balance tradeoffs and find creative breakthroughs.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Familiarity with residential energy management technologies
  • Demonstrated experience with energy management systems targeting the residential and/or utility market. Familiarity with electricity grid terms such as load flexibility, demand response, demand-side management, demand management, distributed energy resources, reliability, duck curve, renewable energy resources, and intermittent energy sources.
