Job Description

Who are we?

Sidewalk Labs is an urban innovation company that tackles cities' greatest challenges. We create products and solutions, invest in new companies, and help developers build more sustainable, innovative, and equitable places around the world. Our ambitious vision requires us to push ourselves beyond conventional thinking, and we work hard in pursuit of our mission. Our cross-disciplinary team consists of experts from real estate, urban planning, government, finance, technology, and engineering, among other backgrounds.

Our urban innovations include Delve (a generative design product that empowers real estate teams to design better, faster, with less risk), Mesa (an easy-install kit for commercial buildings that cuts energy costs, improves tenant comfort, and simplifies building operations), Pebble (a low-cost vehicle sensor to help manage parking and curb space), and Affordable Electrification (a new way to manage home energy use to meet a customer’s monthly budget). We're also developing an offsite construction company that can deliver high-quality mass timber buildings for more sustainable living and working.

With the potential to radically improve quality of life in cities for all, our work is both exciting and complex. We are working to achieve something unprecedented — help us build it!

What is the role?

We are building a team of software engineers to help us develop the Affordable Electrification (AE) platform, an early-stage product for utilities to keep energy costs low and predictable for residential customers today and throughout our global transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. The product includes a software platform with a mobile app for residential utility customers, integrations with smart home, PV & energy storage hardware and control systems, and integrations with utility back end systems. Our goal is to transform how energy is priced and managed for residential customers to enable the replacement of fossil fuels with clean electricity in a manner that can be affordable for all people.

You will report to the Associate Director of Systems Engineering for AE, and work closely with AE’s Product Manager and UX Design & Research lead.

What you have to achieve:

  • Within your first three months, you will:
    • Develop strong relationships within the team and learn each member’s role, skill set, and unique background.
    • Get a firm understanding of the product vision and what we have learned to date.
    • Help evaluate software platforms and products to refine the technology stack and architecture.
    • Work with team members on the development of a prototype.
  • Within six months you will:
    • Help manage Cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines.
    • Support the development and evaluation of new control algorithms to meet product objectives,
    • Help define and prioritize milestones for the development schedule of the AE platform. And,
    • Start development on the AE platform which will integrate with Utility systems and can scale to millions of devices across a Utility network.

What we expect:

  • Know your software engineering.
    • Strong CS background - you do not reinvent the wheel because you already know the right algorithms, systems approach, and patterns by which to solve problems.
    • 5+ years of industry experience - candidates need to be able to hit the ground running. Experience with Python and one or more modern frameworks, plus at least one systems programming language (C/C++, Java, Go or Rust).
    • Experience building and owning full-stack applications end-to-end, which include:
      • Provisioning and managing Cloud infrastructure.
      • Building and tuning database models.
      • Developing applications and API’s.
      • Front-end development (driven by the UX/design teams)
    • Ideally, experience in the development of IoT or home automation systems and knowledge of networking and communication protocols.
  • Act as a technologist.
    • Bias towards action and shipping. Once you’ve sketched out an idea, you find the fastest path to a prototype to prove the concept.
    • Strong ability to write production code quickly.
    • Obsessed with privacy, and constantly ask how we can build privacy into product design.
    • Comfort with a range of languages and open source tools and frameworks, and selecting the right one for a particular problem. You are excited to learn something new when the need arises.
    • You’re creative and come up with new ideas based on your broad understanding of technological possibilities and city domain knowledge.
  • Solve problems, together.
    • Motivated by hurdles and ways to overcome them.
    • Capable of developing novel solutions with technologists and non-technologists alike.
    • You ask hard questions and challenge assumptions to ensure that we’re solving the right problems.
    • Flexible to working on the team’s most pressing problems.
    • Proactive in anticipating and avoiding problems.
  • Care.
    • About cities, solving hard problems, and our team’s success.
    • Committed to creating more equitable and inclusive outcomes both in the workplace and in the work you do.
