Your Role

Aperia Technologies Inc, a thriving venture funded automotive company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, is undergoing rapid expansion. To support our ongoing product growth both domestically and internationally, we are seeking to enhance our hardware design engineering presence in Michigan, with potential new locations in Ann Arbor and/or Grand Rapids. As a Senior Firmware engineer, you will play a crucial role in our firmware development team, responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining embedded firmware for our products. You will contribute your expertise and leadership skill to create robust and efficient firmware solutions that drive the success of our organization and deliver an exceptional experience for our customers.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of embedded firmware for our products, working closely with cross functional teams to ensure the firmware meets the specified requirements and quality standards. 
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to junior firmware engineers, fostering a culture of continuous professional growth and learning within the team.
  • Participate in architectural discussions, proposing and implementing firmware designs that align with product specifications, hardware constraints, and performance requirements.
  • Conduct and participate in code reviews to ensure the quality, efficiency, and maintainability of the firmware codebase, while sharing best practices with firmware team members.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive firmware test plans, including unit testing, integration testing, and system-level testing to ensure the reliability and robustness of the firmware.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to define and implement interfaces between firmware and hardware components to guarantee seamless integration and optimal performance.
  • Identify opportunities for performance optimization and code efficiency improvements, striving to optimize the firmware to meet real-time and resource-constrained requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve complex technical issues in the firmware, providing timely solutions to ensure a smooth operation of our products throughout their lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of firmware development tools, processes, and best practices to increase productivity and efficiency within the firmware team.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation for the firmware, including design specifications, API documentation, and firmware release notes.

Skills/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering or related field (MS preferred). 
  • 8+ years of proven experience as a firmware engineer with a strong focus on embedded systems, real time operating systems and embedded Linux.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in firmware development, such as C, C++, Assembly, and Python. 
  • In-depth knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollers, memory management, and memory safe implementation approaches.
  • Experience with firmware development tools, debuggers, and version control systems.
  • Familiarity with simulation and test systems such as MATLAB and LabVIEW.
  • Understanding of hardware interfaces, communication protocols (e.g., UART, SPI, GPIO, I2C, CAN bus) and device drivers.
  • Knowledge of firmware testing methodologies and test-driven development (TDD) principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with high attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to efficiently collaborate with cross functional teams.
  • Experience with low power battery enhancing techniques is a plus.
  • Experience with commercially available BLE stacks is a plus.
  • Experience with IoT-related software stacks is a plus (e.g., MQTT).
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies is a plus.

Pay Range: $120,000- $170,000

*Base salary only. Salary dependent on multiple factors including, but not limited to, experience and location.
