Job Description

Our Mission

At Span, we are building products to enable the rapid adoption of renewable energy. As more distributed energy resources like solar and storage come onto the grid, it’s increasingly important to be able to improve the technology that sits between the grid, the home, and those distributed energy resources. Span’s smart panel replaces the electrical panel to become the center for connected power in the home.  With Span, homeowners receive all the safety features of a standard panel with revolutionary insights and edge-of-grid controls through our mobile app.

The Role

You’ll be a key member of the cross-functional product management & applications engineering team, with the mission to bring exceptional energy products to market. You'll work at the intersection of Span’s engineering design and sales teams to bring new products from concept to reality. Your work will focus on mechanical and electrical elements, driving early and iterative prototyping and incorporating user feedback from internal and external groups. Ultimately, you'll be translating product knowledge into creative solutions to drive product innovation and excellence.

Members of our team are collaborative, hands-on, creative, and most of all passionate about driving the adoption of clean energy technologies at scale.

In this role, you will:

  • Be hands on developing early prototypes and testing them to inform design approaches
  • Apply design thinking and human-centered design principles to create intuitive, delightful user interfaces
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to gather and organize product requirements
  • Evaluate and compare off the shelf components for user experience and product fit
  • Use a data-driven approach to product development, drawing on market research and internal data
  • Work across engineering domains (mechanical design, industrial design, electrical design, thermals, field applications engineering, software and systems architecture, e.g.) to build a comprehensive understanding of Span’s products
  • Work directly with end users (homeowners, solar and storage installers, electrical contractors, e.g.) to understand their needs, and represent the voice of the end user in the product development process
  • Strive for high quality robust design that impresses customers and lasts for 20+ years.
  • Collaborate with the broader product team to define and prioritize feature and product roadmaps
  • Research relevant product standards and their influence on design (UL, IEEE, ANSI e.g.)

About You

  • Experience with Product Management tools (e.g Productboard, Jira, or Roadmunk)
  • Creativity, passion, and is comfortable working in a dynamic environment
  • Collaborative, team-oriented personality

We would love to hire someone who has:

  • Prior experience building home energy products such as solar, home batteries, EV chargers
  • Experience with home IoT devices
  • Experience creating and releasing designs in CAD (e.g. Solidworks)
  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques (e.g. 3D printing, CNC machining, or sheet metal fab)
  • Understanding of AC and DC power as it relates to solar photovoltaics (PV) and energy storage systems
  • Hands-on experience with electrical wiring and/or construction
