Job Description

Location: Flexible - occasional travel to Bristol

We launched in 2009 with a mission to change energy for the better. Since then, we’ve welcomed over a million members, planted a million trees, and set our sights on helping save the planet.

As a Group, we’re working to become a net zero carbon business by 2030, while helping our OVO Energy members halve their carbon footprints at the same time.

Green energy and technology are great tools to fight the climate crisis with. But it’s people power that will rewrite history.

So we’re building a zero carbon team inside and out. Of people who share our values, feel inspired by our mission, and want to make change happen. When you work for OVO, it’s not just a job. It’s the work of a lifetime. And we want the sharpest minds to help.

Up for the challenge?

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

OVO is a highly data-driven organisation with an ever growing demand for excellent quality, reliable and accurate low-latency data to power our decisioning: our Product teams working out the best way to serve and delight our members in a highly regulated and competitive market, our Data Science teams building tools and models to help members reduce their carbon impact by analysing their 10sec smart meter data, our Leadership team prioritising how we integrate our Group companies and rationalise our organisational and technical architectures. One of our most important costs to manage is our bad debt charge.

We need to sensitively collect money from members, ensuring that payments are affordable and supporting our customers to manage their debts. To support our commercial outcomes, we need to be able to empower the organisation with cutting edge debt data products. You will work as part of a growing set of teams focused on building our Intelligence Hub, providing OVO with advanced data products and services.

What will I be doing?

Part of the Data Science team, and working closely with our Data Scientists, Analysts and Collections SMEs, you will be responsible for building and commercialising a range of debt data products and services that advance our digital collections agenda. These products and services include:

  • Personalising our debt pathways, such that we define the next best action for an individual customer, based on their individual propensity to cure, cost of treatment and available resources. The role will embed this solution into our new collections workflow, creating a reinforcement model that constantly refinines our approach
  • Iterating our expected credit loss model, defining the forward looking provisions so that we adequately and accurately protect OVO from changing macro conditions, e.g., COVID impact on unemployment etc.
  • Working closely with our collections team to develop our credit scoring and subsequent interventions. Step-changing our approach to acquisition decisioning with the use of 3rd party data, e.g., Open Banking AIS
  • Enhancing our Open Banking powered ability to pay journey, scaling the product to support more customers with digitally facilitated, affordable payment plans
  • Commercialising and developing our early work on Change of Tenancy data models, from predicting the likelihood of a change of tenancy, to recognising when a change of tenancy has happened and we have not been informed

Key responsibilities include:

  • Growing the stable of debt data products by identifying and prioritising new use cases based on business value and alignment to vision
  • Capturing and understanding often complex or ambiguous needs and working together with a team of data scientists and engineers to build and maintain tools and services to meet these
  • Be the voice of our customer with regards to ethics on how their data is used to support them in meeting their financial commitments.
  • Using data and designing specific tests to evaluate how a personalised approach to customer debt management supports both better customer experience outcomes and better commercial outcomes.
  • Learning through qualitative feedback and quantitative data points to constantly iterate towards the long term vision
  • Refine and evolve the Vision and Roadmap for our debt data agenda over time, and ensure this is clearly communicated
  • Defining and tracking a set of key metrics to measure success
  • Building trusted relationships with stakeholders at all levels across the breadth of the business, and the wider OVO Group
  • Own relationships with 3rd party partners e.g. data providers and identify where additional data can enhance the debt data products
  • Ensuring successful alignment of roadmaps and delivery of value across interdependent teams, by leveraging these relationships

Is this the job for me?

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Junior Product Manager from a data background to continue to develop or a data specialist/planner looking to learn Product Management skills.

Ideally you will be:

  • An accomplished product manager, with at least 2 years experience of modern product discovery and delivery methodologies to develop innovative, industry-leading tools and services
  • Comfortable with the ambiguity that comes from working in a fast-paced environment and adaptable to ever changing business demands
  • Highly data-literate with a focus on measurable outcomes
  • Able to weigh up the relative demands of multiple stakeholders at once, cutting through to the most valuable to the business
  • Experienced in developing technical products, and ideally have experience working with or building solutions which embed sophisticated data models, or data platforms, services, tools or components
  • Experience working with cross functional teams including data specific roles e.g data scientist, ML engineer or advanced data analyst
  • Ideally from a background in software development, data science or analytics, or have a familiarity with one or more of the following: streaming data; cloud technologies; data modelling; web, file and/or streaming integrations
  • Adept at stepping between multiple functional domains and able to understand their value streams, priorities and pain points quickly, for example across member experience, energy trading, finance, metering, or marketing

From us you’ll get*

  • An annual discretionary bonus
  • 4% of your salary to spend on flexible lifestyle benefits
  • 5% matched employer contribution to your pension
  • 25 days holiday + 1 for your birthday
  • And many more...

(*) Please note that certain benefits kick-in once you have passed probation which can be up to 6 months after your start date.
