Position: Associate Scientist/Senior Research Associate, Microbiology - Culture Collection

We are seeking an experienced Senior Research Associate to join our Culture Collection efforts on the Strain Analytics team. Our team supports our R&D program through maintenance of a rapidly expanding microbial strain collection and in assisting in characterization of our key microbes. In this role you will also measure the growth & viability of our microbes, develop media for novel bacteria and work on other chemical or biological assays to phenotype our strains. We are looking for someone who is energized by solving creatively and excited to tackle a key agricultural challenge in a fast paced and supportive environment. Must be able to work independently and as a part of a dynamic team. This position will require travel between our Berkeley, CA and Hayward, CA research facilities. Responsibilities:

  • Culture and preserve novel microbial strains for research and manufacturing use.
    • QC strain banks using PCR, sequencing, dilution plating, and microscopy
    • Oversee existing freezer stock inventory and inventory maintenance
    • Troubleshoot and improve upon existing processes including automation and process development for novel microbes
  • Lead in phenotyping our strains via a suite of chemical, biological and molecular assays
  • Collaborate closely with Regulatory, Isolation and Strain engineering teams as needed.
  • QC, analyze and communicate your data in written reports and at team meetings
  • Maintain a thorough lab notebook and required electronic documentation
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate resources within and across teams
  • Bring your excitement and enthusiasm for working in a fast paced, dynamic environment

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Master of Science and 2 years of experience (or Bachelor of Science + 4 years of experience) degree in life sciences, biological systems engineering, biochemical engineering, or related field or equivalent related experience
  • At least two years’ experience in a fast-paced research lab environment
  • Deep understanding of microbiology and experience with standard molecular biology techniques (colony PCR, microbial cell culture, DNA quantification/extraction, gel electrophoresis)
  • Proven ability to manage deadlines and multiple ongoing multi-day workflows
  • An understanding of research/development, and the principles behind experiment design and execution (e.g. importance of controls, answering research questions, and testing hypotheses)
  • Following and writing Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documents
  • Able to perform physically repetitive laboratory tasks
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to work in both Berkeley and Hayward locations, as needed
  • A deep appreciation for the art of aseptic handling/technique
  • Familiar with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • 2+ years’ experience working in the biotech industry
  • Experience working in high-throughput (96-well) formats strongly preferred
  • Experience working with laboratory liquid handling automation
  • Extensive experience culturing diverse bacteria and working with non-model organisms
  • Experience with process development and scale-up
  • Experience managing and/or mentoring more junior researchers
