About Our Team:

Our water process engineers examine the influent for sewage treatment plants and define the appropriate treatment process against the required effluent consents. Or look at the raw water quality data and determine the clean water treatment steps needed. They work on all aspects of the design lifecycle from optioneering and feasibility to detailed design. They ensure designs meet the required performance also identify the most sustainable treatment method that can be used. They develop process sizing calculations and mass balances to define all items of equipment, whilst ensuring that they comply with the relevant client and industry standards. They also initiate control philosophies to define how a plant will operate, before collaborating with the other designers. The successful applicants will work closely with other design disciplines and stakeholders, to ensure that the design elements interface correctly.

An example project is Spernal STW. AECOM was asked to provide the outline design for a wastewater treatment works by a water company as part of an upgrade to the works and changes to the consent. This involved initially looking at the treatment required including new aerations lanes and final settlement tanks. Options for reducing footprint by increasing the depth of the plant were reviewed in line with increases to blower power requirements due to the increased depth to define the final solution. A new tertiary treatment plant was also required due to the reduction in phosphorous consent. The process team contacted different suppliers and carried out a whole life cost to select the most appropriate technology.
