Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.The SPARC instrumentation and control team are seeking an experienced data systems software engineer to take responsibility for the implementation of the SPARC data acquisition and visualization system (DAQ). SPARC will produce millions of data points per second during plasma operation as well as record data continuously throughout the life of the machine. DAQ must record this data and provide a unified interface for its access and interrogation to identify trends and correlation between the performance of different systems, plasma phenomena and environmental conditions. The visualization aspects require the development of a web-based annotation system.

This team member will:

  • Design, implement, test and maintain the software for the SPARC DAQ
  • Implement the architecture defined by the lead DAQ engineer
  • Work with diagnosticians to configure data acquisition and analysis tasks
  • Develop high level data acquisition device support
  • Contribute to MDSplus software development effort
  • Support systems and user level database applications
  • Collaborate with other software and I&C engineers and other key stakeholders to ensure all necessary functions and interfaces are included in the design and implemented according to requirements
  • Apply the software quality assurance process appropriate to the quality levels of the applications
  • Production of the required design deliverables according to the SPARC design process
  • Produce testing, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance procedures for DAQ
  • Manage suppliers of software components and integrated subsystems of DAQ
  • Report on and be accountable for progress to the head of I&C and the lead DAQ engineer

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in software engineering, computer science or similar
  • Experience with Databases
  • Experience with Software development lifecycles including agile, waterfall, V-model
  • Experience with Following coding standards
  • Experience with Version control
  • Knowledge of C/C++, Python, Java
  • Knowledge of Linux

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Matlab, Javascript
  • WinCC-OA
  • MDSplus
  • InfluxDB
  • Time-series databases
  • Plant historians
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, sitting, etc. for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, and noise
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
