Job Description

We are looking for an experienced engineer to lead the development of a tech and data infrastructure

Climate Farmers is a young, driven impact start-up with a strong vision for the European agricultural sector. We're building the infrastructure for scaling regenerative agriculture by developing an open-access knowledge platform, transition finance instruments and the central European regenerative farming community. Currently we are building a team around remote sensing applications and soil dynamic models for agricultural and land-management evaluation. The role of Climate Farmers is to catalyse existing solutions while creating an inclusive and controlled infrastructure for holistically monitoring agricultural landscapes around the globe. As Head of Tech Infrastructure & Platforms you will be responsible for activities, technologies and resources around building, operating and scaling the data infrastructure and platform software configuration for the whole company.

About the Science & Technology Team

The Science & Technology Team consists of a young, innovative and enthusiastic group of people. Over the past year we have tested and researched the market extensively. Now we’re looking for an experienced technology expert like you who can connect the dots and build the infrastructure for scalable growth.

We aim to empower teams at Climate Farmers to effectively deploy and operate their services while being self-sufficient. We operate as a distributed team that practices open, respectful and transparent communication with extensive use of modern remote-work practices.

Tasks

  • Improving and further developing the data infrastructure for aggregation, utilization and managing farm and ecological data
  • Translating and converting the long-term tech vision into a prioritized roadmap and sprints
  • Building, operating and managing a server deployment across multiple clouds and hosting providers, and across deployments while integrating services and operations
  • Ensuring scalability, performance and resilience of the platform, including adequate backups, disaster recovery etc, and ensuring the processes to respond to and resolve to incidents are defined and resourced
  • Leading collaboration with the product team, research, our open-source community and the educational Climate Farmers Academy
  • Making budgetary reports and recommendations to the CTO as appropriate to existing and planned infrastructure and platform initiatives
  • Act as a technical advisor and think creatively of solutions
  • Design, implement, document and test our code
  • Learn from feedback and incorporate them into product requirements and user stories

Requirements

This is a non-extensive list of indicators. For us it is more important that you are willing to learn and fit into our team instead of knowing everything on this list.

  • 5+ years of experience with Python and/or R
  • Expertise in multiple platforms, including Linux and of other related Open Source platform technologies E.g. High Availability DBs, caching such as Memcached/Redis, Security, Failover, Replication, Load Balancing, API management etc
  • Expertise in DevOps principles and practice such as Continuous Integration, deployment automation, deployment via version control, continuous Deployment
  • Knowledge of Docker is a plus
  • Experience working in and leading fast paced and agile teams
  • Deep understanding of Data Structures and Algorithms
  • Sufficient practical experience in developing statistical, machine learning, and/or simulation models
  • Some understanding of the Google cloud infrastructure and Google Earth Engine
  • Communication skills and the ability and willingness to explain and translate complex topics and results to non expert audiences
  • Knowledge of agriculture
