Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, is hiring immediately for a full time Plant Process Engineer at our Pasadena, TX office.  This position requires ~10% domestic travel (mainly within TX and LA).

The successful candidate will join the Americas Plant Process Engineering team. They will provide process engineering support as part of an operations organization that pursues outstanding performance for the fleet of Air Products hydrogen plants and pipelines. The position supports a mix of hydrogen plants and the pipeline systems located in the Texas Gulf Coast. These plants and pipelines are critical components to the success of the HYCO Americas Business. This position will be based out of the Pasadena, TX office with travel to the plants within driving distance.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Primary contact for Plant Process Engineering support of 3-4 hydrogen plants of various production scale.  Monitor and/or review their performance (e.g., efficiency, reliability) and proactively identify and troubleshoot operating issues.
  • Support for plant safety, health, and environmental performance.  Responsibilities include adherence to management of change (MOC) procedures, execution of project hazard reviews, engineering support for environmental compliance, and regular participation in safety programs and training.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement productivity projects that improve reliability, efficiency, costs, and/or capacity. Define work scope, generate project requests, work orders, MOC’s, etc. as required to execute these projects.
  • Prepare for and support efforts during plant turnarounds, including project execution, catalyst changeouts, and investigation of inspection discoveries.
  • Monitor plant efficiency and proactively address variances in performance, including development and analysis of plant efficiency models and use of associated engineering tools.
  • Assist in the resolution of significant reliability and maintenance issues involving unusual corrosion, steam quality concerns, fouling of heat transfer surfaces, premature catalyst degradation, and other chronic equipment and performance problems as they arise.
  • As opportunities arise, the individual will be requested to provide support to other HyCO facilities within the US and Canada.
  • Pipeline support responsibilities of the position include:
  • Identify productivity improvement opportunities with an emphasis on pipeline sourcing cost reduction; including reduction in raw materials, utilities consumption/cost/supply, production process reliability and capacity utilization.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and support pipeline operating and control strategies to achieve financial and operating targets.
  • Regularly interface with the operations, business, and supply chain teams to ensure the pipeline operating plans and optimization strategies integrate the complex customer contracts. Analyze and implement operational and control changes with customer and contract modifications.
  • Develop and utilize tools to provide first line hydraulic technical support to the operation and delivery of product through the pipeline systems.
  • Provide process engineering consultation and support to the Customer Service Center, to help troubleshoot and resolve system operating problems. Assist operations to resolve pipeline quality, reliability, and operability issues.

Minimum Hiring Requirements:

  • B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering strongly preferred; other disciplines will be considered based on experience.
  • 5 – 12 years of experience in an engineering role; operations engineering support and/or operations experience with troubleshooting experience are beneficial.
  • Experience with large scale hydrogen/syngas production or other high temperature process gas facility is desired.
  • Project development and execution experience is a plus.
  • A basic understanding of process engineering related disciplines such as process controls, process safety and equipment/plant design.
  • The ability to make balanced decisions weighing operability, reliability, capital costs, and operating costs.
