OVERVIEWThe Quality Specialist’s primary role is to ensure that quality and food safety programs are being followed, making quality evaluations, recommending actions for improvement, and assuring prompt resolution. This role is responsible to report deviations from established standards and policies to facility leadership and to ensure corrective action, with an emphasis on but not limited to GMPs, Microbiology and good Sanitation practices. The Quality Specialist will work collaboratively across the organization to support product safety and quality programs, routinely summarize data, and apply technical knowledge to ensure products manufactured meet requirements of customers, regulatory authorities, and quality standards of the Company. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with management on proactively improving quality assurance program. Manage day to day QC and sanitation operations. Build and develop QC staff.
  • Provide on-site QA support including pre-operational inspection of equipment, ATP swabbing and ensure GMP’s are being followed throughout the site.
  • Ensure all sanitation and food safety guidelines are being met throughout the manufacturing facility. Accountable for monitoring, verification and validation activities and ensure that all products leaving the facility meet quality and food safety standards.
  • Establish processes and procedures for identifying, collecting, updating, and distributing controlled documents for the site. This involves writing and maintaining document control procedures and participating in the development and roll-out of document control tools.
  • Responsible for all product hold and release. Review production and QA paperwork.
  • Perform internal site audits. Ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures, as well as with any regulatory (Federal, State, Local) requirements. 
  • Active member of the site HACCP and Food Safety teams. Duties include identification of hazards and controls related to processes and environment, supporting pre-requisite program verification activities and developing HACCP plans as needed.
  • Take an active role in supporting behavior-based safety. Coordinate training and development of employees for all hygiene programs that include: sanitation, GMP, Pest Control, allergens, and hygienic engineering. 
  • Assist QA Manager with SQF certification and program maintenance.
  • Promote quality/hygiene awareness throughout the site through coaching, training and onsite audits.
  • Ensure that sanitation programs are effectively implemented, validated, and maintained to ensure that all products are manufactured in a sanitary environment. This includes assessment of the sanitation and hygiene of the facility environment (internal/external) as well as the processing and supporting equipment. 
  • Respond to food safety related concerns and complaints with corrective action reports.
  • Ensure that validated Sanitation and Allergen SOP’s are in place. Ensure effective/efficient cleaning frequency is managed through an MSS (Master Sanitation Schedule). 
  • Manage building requirements, special requests and communicate with Sanitation team. Order supplies, chemicals & consumables. Ensure the building is being sanitized properly.
  • Coordinate and review of pre-shipment documents, shipping samples and other sample requests.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science or Microbiology preferred or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.
  • Working knowledge of GMP, 5S and SQF standards required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a food and/or beverage manufacturing environment.
  • Strong PC skills; proficient in Microsoft office programs
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • The employee must have the ability to quantitatively review technical procedures and representative regulations. 
  • Ability to effectively present information to groups and respond to questions from peers, supervisors, and managers is essential.
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities within Quality Assurance and work in a fast-paced environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position requires the following break out of a typical day: 70% production floor duties and 30% desk duties. Moderate computer use, emails, and phone calls.
  • Office, production, and warehouse floor environment.
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Standard hours are 6:30 am – 6:30 pm, Monday – Friday
  • Occasional weekend support as needed.
