Job Description

Are you ready to take the science off the shelf and get it out into the world where it can make a difference?  Are you a strategist who can mobilize scientists and activists to take on the biggest, most harmful industries and win? Can you build leadership in the scientific community and help the environmental movement become a movement for racial justice? The Union of Concerned Scientists seeks a talented organizer to create and run science-based advocacy campaigns that recruit and develop the capacity of experts and activists, deepen and draw on the strength of partnerships with allied organizations, and make a material difference in the western states on climate, energy, transportation, and water.

Responsibilities

Direct outreach components of the Western States campaigns on vehicles, fuels, energy, climate, and water issues.

Engage UCS supporters, members, and science network experts to further campaign goals and build power for the long term.

Develop web content and print materials that will increase campaign impact in collaboration with other team members.

Develop online organizing tactics and use UCS systems to track impact.

Cultivate relationships with key allies.

Participate in cross-campaign outreach activities and planning.

Maintain and update working knowledge of general Western States policy issues relevant to climate, renewable energy, clean transportation, and racial justice.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required. At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with racial equity and inclusion principles and ways that race and other identities intersect in the work, particularly in the scientific, policymaking, and environmental communities. Must be comfortable talking about identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, or gender in plain, specific terms. Some understanding of the historical context for racial inequity and its present-day implications is required.
  • Proficiency in word processing is required, and experience with Microsoft Office is preferred.
  • Ability to use web-based platforms and sophisticated online tools to advance advocacy goals
  • Some knowledge of clean vehicles, climate, and energy policy are strongly preferred.
