About the Job

About Rondo Energy

Rondo Energy's mission is to eliminate 15% of global CO2 emissions in 15 years.

To accomplish this mission, Rondo is deploying low-cost, zero-carbon Rondo Heat Batteries to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and to significantly decarbonize industrial processes that are commonly thought of as "difficult-to-decarbonize". Our Heat Batteries charge from intermittent renewables to provide high temperature, continuous heat for customers safely, reliably, at an unprecedented 98% efficiency - and at a cost point that is lower than any other method.

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Structural Engineer/Designer to join our team and help us revolutionize industrial heat at scale.

In this role, you will be primarily responsible for ensuring that the design of various subsystems within Rondo's Heat Batteries aligns with product requirements and meets performance criteria, including manufacturability and constructibility as well as cost-effectiveness. Your work in this role will be instrumental in driving the success of Rondo's Heat Batteries and our mission to decarbonize the world.

Join our team and together we can reduce world CO₂ emissions by 1% in 10 years, and by 15% in 15 years!

What You Will Do (key responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to):

  • Develop structural design for components and connections of thermal system assemblies. Assemblies include main load-resisting structural members and support frames for architectural/mechanical components such as insulation walls/enclosures, louvers, ducts, plenums, pipes, etc.
  • Execute structural designs in accordance with applicable national and international codes. Where code-based design is insufficient or not directly applicable, develop rigorous, well-documented design methodologies and testing/validation plans to ensure the safety and reliability of the final design solutions.
  • Perform finite-element modeling and utilize other analytical methods to verify structural performance.
  • Develop detailed design documentation, including drawings, sketches, calculation reports, and fabrication-ready CAD models.
  • Support developing design requirements and specifications.
  • Support design and construction coordination with internal and external stakeholders such as EPCs, general contractors, and design-assist partners.
  • Support prototyping and/or testing required to achieve robust and cost-effective solutions for our core technology, as well as for tooling and other equipment that supports manufacturing.
  • Operate in an inclusive, collaborative, and iterative design team, contributing to fostering an open engineering culture.

What You Will Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering with a specialization in structures.
  • 5+ years of experience designing structural systems, ideally within the context of process/industrial infrastructure projects. Experience working with several types of structural materials, including concrete, structural steel, cold-formed steel, and refractories.
  • Experience in advanced FEA with static and dynamic structural modeling coupled with thermal modeling, heat transfer analysis, and stress cycling.
  • Experience using structural engineering software such as SAP2000, SAFE, CFS, and Ideastatica.
  • Excellent communication skills; comfortable gathering, synthesizing, and disseminating program information among internal and external technical and non-technical parties.
  • Flexibility, openness, and creative problem-solving
  • Comfort working with fast-based environments, with uncertainty, and in collaborative team settings.

Bonus Points!

  • An advanced degree in structural mechanics
  • PE license in civil/structural
  • Experience in mechanical design
  • Experience in FEA and CAD modeling (SolidWorks, Ansys, 3DEC) and BIM modeling and coordination (Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD)
  • Experience working in a start-up environment

What We Offer:

  • Comprehensive Medical Benefits
  • Dental & Vision Benefits
  • Life Insurance and ADD
  • Up to 12 paid holidays per year, in addition to a company week-long holiday in December
  • Flexible time off policy
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Rondo HQ is close to Oakland airport - one block from the Bay - and has stunning Bay views!

This role is preferred to be on-site Alameda, California though strong candidates from different geographies open to travel will be considered. The estimated annual salary range for a candidate in the Bay Area for this role is $125,000.00 to $200,000.00, plus equity in an early-stage, rapidly scaling global company. Additionally, you would be eligible for Rondo's excellent benefits listed above. Please note that some pay bands may have wide ranges of compensation to accommodate candidates' diverse sets of skill levels, experience, and geographic locations.

Rondo Energy is an equal opportunity employer. We strive to create a supportive and inclusive workplace where contributions are valued and celebrated, and our employees thrive by being themselves and are inspired to do their best work.
