Job Overview

The Technical Specialist working with our Benelux (and other European) clients is a lead chain of custody auditor who is responsible for making reliable certification decisions and has a key role in ensuring the credibility and high quality of our third-party certification service. The role entails interpretation and implementation of standards, quality control of audits, prompt and professional customer service and administrative and technical support to domestic and international field auditors, clients, affiliated offices and colleagues. Fluency in English and Dutch and work experience that involves professional and technical written communication in English and Dutch.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Duties

  • Review audit reports from auditors to provide oversight and quality control
  • Make decisions to grant, maintain, reduce, expand, suspend or terminate certification based on evidence of conformance with requirements
  • Support ongoing training and evaluation of performance for contract auditors.
  • Be proficient in program and certification requirements, ensuring a pragmatic approach to a wide range of circumstances while maintaining the integrity of the certification scheme (e.g. FSC, PEFC, SBP, etc.)
  • Consider and implement changes affecting certification (either client or scheme initiated)
  • Monitor status of clients’ Corrective Action Requests, including CAR reminders to clients or affiliates where relevant; for SCS-managed clients, review evidence and make decisions on whether corrective action is sufficient to close the CAR
  • Ensure implementation of program procedures and documents
  • Perform audits of varying complexity in industrial and urban settings, at companies such as sawmills, door manufacturers, veneer manufacturers, paper distributors, and printers, and write high-quality audit reports
  • Perform witness and internal audits where necessary

Communications

  • Primary point of contact for client technical support and guidance
  • Communicate regularly with clients and auditors, and international affiliate staff/ auditors, ensuring they are informed of changing policies, procedures, and requirements
  • Communicate requirements clearly, effectively and concisely

Benelux Program Support

  • Support the development of external communication materials for Benelux clients, providing translation support when necessary.
  • Support departmental quality program and implement quality initiatives as they relate to Benelux
  • Aid in the development of internal procedures and guidelines
  • Support the closure of accreditation agency nonconformities and internal Corrective Action Requests when they are issued against Benelux operations

 

Qualifications

  • Fluency in English and Dutch and work experience that involves professional and technical written communication in English and Dutch.
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong customer service and teamwork orientation
  • Initiative, good judgment, ability to work independently, responsive and adaptive personality
  • Applied experience in auditing and/or quality assurance
  • Proficient with business software including Outlook, Word, Excel and database management
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered, unless precluded by local and national jurisdiction. Pursuant to local and national law--proof of vaccination required. Medical and religious accommodations will also be considered.

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, sustainability, environmental studies, or a related field
  • ISO training certification or willingness to complete the ISO training offered by SCS
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in the forest products sector
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferable, or in lieu of the bachelor’s degree a minimum 4 years of professional experience in the forest products sector

Work Environment and requirements

Primarily a home office role with periodic local, domestic and international trips for chain of custody audits of manufacturers, printers and traders of forest products.

Physical Requirements:
This is an office based job. Sit 6+ hours per day. Keyboarding 6+ hours per day. Must be able to speak and listen in person and on the phone.
