Facilities Fellow at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

This Facilities position is supported through an innovative partnership between PG&E and Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI). Aimed at addressing the myriad of energy and environmental sustainability initiatives, this Fellowship model presents a distinct opportunity to shape energy efficiencies and sustainability practices across sectors and institutional roles.

At the core of this program is developing the next generation of thinkers and doers to help address sustainability in higher education settings. Roles in educational sustainability require a distinct combination of aptitudes including project management, data analytics and community development. In addition to the Climate Corps training and professional certificate, this position offers professional development opportunities designed to help provide the range of skills necessary to execute sustainable programs or practices.

The candidate will work on pressing climate and sustainability problems and be relied upon to work toward replicable solutions. A customized mix of on the job training, field work and class time will help the Fellow hone marketable skills and draw important professional connections while making a marked difference in their community.

Role and Responsibilities:
The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO) Energy, Utilities and Sustainability (EU&S) team is seeking a recent college graduate to fulfill a 10-month, full time Climate Corps Fellowship position to support campus initiatives that bridge sustainability in the built environment with classroom resources and instruction to move towards greater adoption of campus as a living lab practices.
Aligning with the California State University system goals to reach carbon neutrality by 2040, and in compliance with California State and California State University System energy efficiency goals and mandates, this position will:
●Lead development of a public facing online energy and utilities information dashboard for Cal Poly leveraging Cal Poly’s Skyspark Energy Information System. The position will work with campus stakeholders to solicit feedback on charts, graphs and downloadable datasets to be used within facilities and for academic purposes. (40% time)
●Support and coordinate with the EU&S team in developing a new campus greenhouse gas inventory, including expanding data collection efforts to capture refrigerants, agriculture emissions, off-campus travel and more. This position will also support the development campus’ updated climate action plan. (40% time)
●Support Cal Poly’s effort to earn an AASHE STARS Platinum rating by supporting projects and programs that result in improved sustainability across campus while also earning STARS points. (10% time)
●Support various energy, water and waste data collection and analysis efforts requested by the EU&S manager. (10% time)

Desired Qualifications:
●Have strong data analytical skills, namely in Microsoft Excel. Experience with Microsoft Power BI a plus, though not required.
●Be familiar and comfortable with basic energy and water units, conversions and terminology (i.e. kWh, CCF, tons of CO2, etc.)
●Be able to work independently while also excelling in teamwork environments.
●Possess strong communication skills in writing and with data.
●Be an organized self-starter and have excellent time management skills.
●Be motivated and responsible to complete projects in a timely and professional manner.
●Be comfortable with the basic functions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
●Be willing to use Cal Poly workflow systems such as Microsoft Office 365.
●Be available to attend weekly team meetings and scheduled work blocks.
●Follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Climate Corps Qualifications:
●Availability for the full-time, 10-month Fellowship program, beginning in November 2021
●Climate Corps Fellows must have completed a 4-year degree by the time the program cycle starts in November 2021. We are looking for emerging professionals with:
●An educational background in environmental policy, science, engineering, sustainable management or planning degrees (volunteer and internship experience will be considered).
●An understanding of clean energy and environmental policy.
●Experience in and the drive to address racism and create race equity with the team members and programmatically.

Benefits:
●Living allowance stipend of $2255 per month (before taxes) and travel stipend if needed.

●Extensive professional development and skill building. Upon program completion, Fellows are awarded a Climate Change Protection Professional certificate by Skyline College.
●A financial award upon program completion.

Climate Corps
Climate Corps is an award-winning fellowship program under SEI that provides professional development opportunities for emerging leaders through implementation of sustainability and resiliency projects with local governments, nonprofits, and for-profit businesses. In essence, Climate Corps revolves around our Fellows to help them become the best sustainability professionals they can be. Climate Corps hires Fellows who then complete their fellowship with a specific host organization. Throughout the program, Fellows will receive one-on-one mentorship as well as monthly professional development trainings with their Climate Corps cohort. More than 85% of Fellows continue on in the sustainability field within 1 month of completing the Climate Corps Fellowship.
