About the Job
What You'll Do
- Serve as the subject matter expert in mechanical and structural mechanics for superconducting system components.
- Conduct detailed mechanical and structural analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to assess design and operational requirements, accounting for thermal, mechanical, and electrical interactions.
- Lead the design, development, and testing of key system components, from concept through to fabrication.
- Define mechanical requirements and oversee qualification testing for system components, managing both in-house and external resources.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to support system deployment, ensuring the integration of cryogenic thermal management systems.
- Review design calculations, drawings, and submittals from junior engineers, mentoring and guiding them in their development.
- Interface with vendors and manufacturers to maintain timelines and quality standards for component fabrication.
Skills You Have
- Minimum of 5 years of experience (8+ preferred) in mechanical engineering, with a strong foundation in mechanical and structural analysis.
- Skilled in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software and creating engineering drawings for external fabrication.
- Proficient in coding with MATLAB, Python, or similar languages.
- Familiar with industry standards like ASME 31.3 and/or BPVC, with experience designing pressure vessels or similar components.
- A continuous improvement mindset to innovate and optimize system designs.
- Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration, vendor management, and team mentoring.
- Willingness to travel for short durations during product deployment phases.
Who You Are
- You bring a solid background in mechanical engineering, ideally with extensive experience in structural mechanics and FEA.
- Known for your precision and your ability to ideate, iterate, and execute complex designs.
- You are an outstanding communicator (written and verbal) across all levels of the organization and can work effectively in a fast-paced collaborative environment.
- You are a highly motivated, self-starter with a positive approach to problem solving
- You are driven by results - you gauge your success in measurable positive impact (not in how much you check off the to do list) and know how to ruthlessly prioritize
- You thrive on effectively managing multiple projects with competing priorities that require making decisions under pressure and working under tight deadlines
- You are highly curious and solutions-oriented, and excel at deconstructing complex problems into manageable components to develop effective solutions
- You are committed to buying into VEIR’s mission and goals, and adopting our core values
About the Company

VEIR
<p>VEIR’s new generation of superconducting electric transmission lines operate with negligible losses at much higher currents than conventional lines and other advanced conductors. The result is transmission of 5-10x more power than conventional lines at a given voltage level. VEIR reduces the space needed to transmit power, maximizes the transfer capabilities in existing corridors, and reduces requirements for new corridors.</p>
