Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role. This individual will be responsible for testing all SPARC superconductor magnets and magnet subassemblies, from initial low-volume R&D to full-scale production, to validate that their performance meets SPARC operational requirements. They are responsible for the design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of the test facility equipment (power, cryogenics, vacuum) necessary to test HTS magnets at the required production rate, including developing all associated P&IDs, schematics, channel lists, wiring diagrams, and data acquisition software. Their areas of focus are writing and executing test plans and procedures, troubleshooting and debugging, and data analysis. This individual will also be responsible for planning and executing performance testing on the HTS tape, including tests across varying temperatures, currents, and fields.

This team member will:

  • Own process development and operation for the integration & testing of HTS magnets from initial low-volume R&D to full-scale production
  • Write, execute, and troubleshoot electrical test plans and procedures for HTS magnets
  • Design, procurement, and commissioning of all test facility equipment (power, cryogenics, vacuum) necessary to test HTS magnets at the required production rate
  • Development of all design reviews, wiring lists, P&IDs, schematics, tooling, data acquisition systems, and operations software
  • Review and analyze test data, lead anomaly investigation and resolution, and present results to a team of physicists and engineers
  • Troubleshoot and resolve integration & test discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Establish and execute plans for future factory expansion, including capital equipment and floor layouts

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or science field is required; electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or applied physics degree preferred
  • Familiarity with electromagnetic fundamentals – voltage, current, resistance, Ohm’s Law, AC/DC, right-hand rule, solenoids, etc.
  • 3+ years' experience as a test engineer on complex electromechanical systems
  • 3+ years’ experience with selecting and utilizing instrumentation and control components such as thermocouples, voltage taps, strain gauges, heaters, flow meters, and solenoid valves
  • 3+ years’ experience testing, troubleshooting, and debugging electronics hardware and test software
  • Experience with designing and commissioning new test facilities
  • Experience with developing and executing test procedures
  • Experience taking products from R&D into production, including developing testing techniques to transition from manual to automated processes
  • Experience developing and effectively presenting comprehensive trade studies comparing the pros & cons of various technical approaches
  • Excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills with great attention to detail
  • Strong desire to improve efficiency and throughput of processes
  • Effective at communicating technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly
  • A can-do attitude and an eagerness to learn
  • Ability to think of innovative solutions to challenging problems
  • Willingness to challenge how things are typically done in search of better, more efficient methods

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience with high field magnet testing, traditional or superconducting
  • Experience with designing fluid systems – P&IDs, component selection, ASME design codes
  • Experience with cryogenic equipment design and use for liquid nitrogen and supercritical helium use – vacuum jacketed equipment, cryocoolers, phase separators, cold traps
  • Experience with high vacuum equipment design and use – roughing pumps, turbopumps, ion gauges, residual gas analyzers
  • Experience with high voltage and high current power equipment design and use – power supplies, water cooled cables, insulation
  • Experience with high field magnet testing
  • Familiarity with programming languages (Python, C/C++, Java)
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
