Our Company

Whisper Aero is pioneering a more compelling and connected future by delivering cleaner, quieter, and more efficient propulsion solutions. Today's open rotor propulsion systems are challenged by safety, noise, and performance limitations at all scales. Whisper's breakthrough technologies allow aircraft to fly anywhere at any time without disturbing communities, at greater speeds, and with incredible improvements in efficiency and cost. Their innovations also enable a new generation of air moving products that can blend into the soundscapes of daily life. Whisper was founded by industry veterans, Mark Moore and Ian Villa, and continues to innovate a future that’s as considerate as it is compelling with its world-class team in Tennessee.

About the Role

Whisper Mechatronics is looking for a motivated and creative Engineering Intern to join our dynamic, cross-disciplinary team. We are seeking students in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering who have a passion for mechanical design and hands-on prototyping. If you have experience in student design-build-fly clubs, hands-on mechanical projects, or a strong interest in interdisciplinary engineering, this is a great opportunity to gain real-world experience working on innovative electromechanical systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist in the design and prototyping of mechanical and electromechanical components, contributing to real-world engineering projects. You’ll use CAD software to create and refine 3D models and assist with rapid prototyping using 3D printing, CNC machining, and other fabrication methods.Work on the integration of aerodynamic designs into larger electromechanical systems, supporting the development of drones, robotics, or similar projects.
  • Engage in Whisper Mechatronics’ Spiral Design approach, where rapid prototyping and real-world testing are prioritized. You’ll contribute to building and testing prototypes to validate design assumptions and improve system functionality.
  • Work closely with engineers from various disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software) to ensure seamless integration of your designs into larger systems. You’ll have opportunities to cross-train and expand your knowledge in new areas.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, ensuring that design and test procedures are well documented for future reference. Present your work to team members during design reviews.
  • Be actively involved in building and assembling prototypes, including wiring, soldering, and troubleshooting. You’ll gain exposure to real-world fabrication and assembly techniques used in industry

Qualifications

  • US Citizenship / Green Card Status
  • You should currently be pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • You’ll use these skills to contribute to detailed mechanical designs and assembly models.
  • Experience with student design clubs, design-build-fly competitions, or personal projects involving mechanical or aerospace design is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated ability to design mechanical components and systems that are functional, manufacturable, and reliable. An interest in testing and refining designs through rapid prototyping is essential.
  • Willingness to learn new skills in other areas, such as electronics, software development, or embedded systems, is a plus. Whisper Mechatronics encourages a cross-disciplinary approach to engineering.
  • Applicants must submit a portfolio showcasing previous mechanical or aerospace design projects. This can include CAD models, prototypes, design-build-fly projects, or any other relevant work that demonstrates your skills and creativity.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with aerodynamic modeling, flight mechanics, or UAV/drones is a strong advantage for aerospace students.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing, CNC machining, or other fabrication techniques is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers or basic coding in languages such as Python or C/C++ is a plus, especially for mechatronics-focused students.
