Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.CFS is seeking a I&C Engineer to help develop, test, and deliver the LabVIEW software suite and associated instrumentation used during integration, test, and production operation of magnet and laboratory electronics test equipment, and Instrumentation & Control systems.

This team member will:

  • Develop LabVIEW HMI/GUI software running on remote control workstations
  • Develop LabVIEW Real-Time software running on National Instruments CompactRIO, or CompactDAQ hardware.
  • Implement bidirectional cross-platform communication for data and control.
  • Implement commercial database applications for searchable data storage solutions, including obsolescence, and archiving.
  • Develop drivers for all analog and digital peripheral system components
  • Implement open-/closed-loop and scheduled control schemes
  • Implement system safety features including interlocks and fault-detection
  • Implement data-logging
  • Developing and maintaining other non-LabVIEW (e.g. Python) code bases, and/or transferring those code bases into or out of LabVIEW
  • Maintain, edit, and improve existing LabVIEW code bases

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or computer science related field.
  • 3+ years in an integration and test software engineering role, working with physical lab equipment
  • 1+ years LabVIEW development
  • Experience with real-time control systems
  • Experience building HMIs/GUIs
  • Experience handing-off software applications to both internal and external customer.
  • Strong fundamentals with Python development.
  • Mastery of the LabVIEW Real-Time Module and CompactRIO hardware
  • Experience with user event structures and concurrency
  • Experience with remote communication including industrial automation protocols (e.g. Modbus), TCP/IP, RS-232, GPIB, DAQmx, CompactDAQ, VISA
  • Experience handling controls and indicators via VI Server
  • Experience maintaining or editing existing codebases
  • Experience assembling and troubleshooting basic electrical and mechanical hardware; and electrical instrumentation (oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies for example)
  • Experience with time series databases, such as influxDB and grafana
  • At least one year developing in a Linux environment
  • Experience successfully working closely with IT teams and research/engineering personnel

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Usage of offsite database management (i.e. AWS or similar) and the features / benefits / detractors) that come with or without using offsite data storage vs onsite.
  • Creation and maintenance of onsite Database management schemes.
  • Signal acquisition and manipulation through DAQ systems.
  • Time synchronization between various systems and process.
  • Ability to occasionally lift 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, sitting, or standing for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/overtime
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include noise and strong magnets
