We are currently looking for a Materials Characterization Engineer to join our team.

Job Brief

Physical and chemical characterization is a key part of understanding the materials in our system and key to making technical progress. As a Materials Characterization Engineer, you will be responsible for sample preparation, materials analysis, and communicating results to other team members to diagnose failure/decay mechanisms in our testing. In this role, you will work closely with senior characterization engineers as well as cross functionally with other members of the Chemistry team.

What You Will Do

  • Identify metal alloy contamination and perform trace metal analysis through ICP-MS
  • Develop the operation procedures, calibration standards and data analysis for ICP-MS samples
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of ICP-MS instrument
  • Independently perform materials characterization (such as XRD, XRF, SEM-EDS, etc.)
  • Perform sample preparation suitable for characterization tasks (standards preparation, dilutions, sample digestions, epoxy mounting)
  • Understand the working components of our electrolyzer system and each component’s material properties
  • Analyze characterization data, summarize results and share with the team
  • Carry out experiments independently after training
  • Maintain a safe and clean laboratory environment
  • Develop and train other team members on SOPs

Who You Are

  • You have 1-3 years of experience working in a materials characterization role
  • B.S. or M.S. degree or equivalent background in Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field
  • 2 years in operation of ICP-MS/OES equipment and sample prep lab is required
  • Experience in XRD, XRF, and SEM-EDS and other materials characterization techniques
  • You have hands-on work experience in a wet lab including strong acid handling and sample preparation/digestion
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to summarize data and present results effectively
  • Detail-oriented with strong record-keeping, documentation and organization skills
  • Self-motivated and ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision
