At Sofar we connect the world’s oceans. We build the technology to create global awareness of ocean weather, climate, and ocean health. Our unique ocean data provides insights to science and society, and our products make ocean industries more sustainable. As a mission-driven team we combine the best in ocean science and Bay Area innovation to capture the canvas of our oceans and drive the new Blue Economy.
We are looking for an experienced Product Manager to join our team as we build a new software product to help the maritime shipping industry lower carbon emissions with better weather data.
Wayfinder, our dynamic weather routing and voyage optimization application, runs on board the largest shipping vessels in the world, providing critical decision-making context for sea captains as they navigate the world's oceans. Global shipping makes up 3% of total carbon emissions, and our products help Captains and Shipping Operators route from Port A to Port B more safely and fuel efficiently. Our Platform & Ecosystem PM will be split their focus between the following:
1) Wayfinder’s routing optimization engine – responsible for synthesizing economic factors, weather factors, safety constraints, and the vessel’s unique performance characteristics to produce safe, cost-efficient, and emissions-efficient routes.
2) Wayfinder data partnerships and ecosystem strategy – building relationships with organizations in the maritime shipping space and identifying opportunities to collaborate or partner on market solutions
This role will work closely with Operations, Engineering, and Business Development, and will report directly to the Head of Product.
Drive product development for Wayfinder’s optimization engine to automate production of safe, cost-efficient, and emissions-efficient shipping routes
Drive scalability and operational requirements for our optimization engine
Work closely with our Ocean Science and Ocean Operations teams, currently operating “in the loop” on routing, to build their decision-making processes into our optimization system
Develop a deep understanding and vision of the maritime shipping industry and ecosystem: its challenges, opportunities, economics, and how its landscape is changing
Work closely with Sales and BD to evaluate and drive data partnerships, joint ventures, and product integrations strategy
4-6 years of product management experience with experience defining product roadmaps – ideally for data or analytics products
3+ years of experience in Agile software development, ideally with experience in infrastructure management and ecosystem/partnerships
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, statistics, or other field with a quantitative component is preferred
Ability to easily communicate complicated concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Experience working in shipping, climate tech, or other ocean industries
