Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.A new class of high-field superconducting magnets will enable the SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net energy from fusion for the first time. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add a Mechanical Engineer to our growing team in Milpitas, CA.This CFS Mechanical Engineer will report to the Head of Superconductor Engineering and will be responsible for aspects of the design, build, and implementation of advanced R&D equipment and complex machinery. This equipment presents a host of challenges including large, robust, and ergonomic high-vacuum chambers; components operating under extreme conditions such as high temperatures; large temperature gradients; complicated component manipulation; large pressure differentials; tight mechanical tolerances; and long run times.

This team member will:

  • Understand system level requirements and work with the team to drive innovative design concepts to meet these requirements
  • Oversight the technical work of skilled, engineers through the design, build, and commissioning cycle of a multidisciplinary mechanical system with multiple integrated subsystems
  • Help to hire and attract new talent
  • Drive concepts through CFS design review process
  • Ensure design rigor while optimizing for cost and schedule
  • Work with the safety officer to ensure a safe working environment
  • Ensures that all material needed for all projects is procure per design specs (e.g. power, gases, cryogens, test equipment, cabling, computing, I&C, draft publication review, SPARC internal website, etc.)
  • An emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity.
  • Final check and approval of key manufacturing drawings
  • Strong leadership abilities, experience building teams, and a talent for inspiring collaboration
  • Build a collaborative, high performance team that demonstrates CFS culture

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of experience working as senior mechanical design engineer, facing similar design challenges
  • Proven leadership skills with large multidisciplinary teams
  • Expertise in conflict resolution and contract negotiation
  • Analytical and strong organizational skills with excellent verbal and written ability

  • Ability to innovate
  • Agile, and capable to adapt to a fast-paced environment
  • Problem solver
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, standing for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat and noise
  • Willingness to travel occasionally or work required nights/weekends/on-call
