Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.This role will be the third hire on the FP&A team. The Senior FP&A analyst will play an important role in helping build the FP&A function and establishing best practices in the organization. The primary function will be to manage financial performance against budget and develop robust forecasts for the world’s first net energy (Q>1) compact fusion systems known as SPARC. This is a major R&D project which is an important step to accelerate the development of commercial fusion energy.

This team member will:

  • Lead cost budgeting, forecasting, tracking, and reporting throughout the development lifecycle of SPARC, as it relates to BOM Cost and Non-recurring engineering (NRE)
  • Lead value engineering and owning the result — finding efficiencies and cost savings — conversely, helping make decisions on when to invest more to reduce risk or speed the process
  • Work closely across the internal organization (Purchasing, Engineering, PMO, Design, IT, Manufacturing and Quality) and with external stakeholders to ensure SPARC material cost and spending is modeled accurately and delivered on target.
  • Support the Finance team and budget owners in assessing prior performance and trends, to develop future forecast, lookahead and risks/opportunities
  • Build reports and dashboards

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics or STEM fields
  • 3-5+ years' experience in preparing and coordinating budgets, modeling, forecasts, and related reporting
  • Experience in R&D environments
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) including experience with financial reporting, forecasting and analysis across the income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows
  • Requires strong quantitative and financial analytic skills
  • Strong Excel experience
  • High energy and engagement, with flexibility to complete work during periodic very busy times
  • Collaborative work style
  • Experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders with a strong customer service orientation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication & data presentation skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with both business and technical teams
  • Ability to work effectively with accounting systems
  • Experience preparing and reviewing complex models in Excel
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical, planning, and organizational skills

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Ability to work effectively with accounting systems such as Odoo
  • Budgeting and forecasting for large capital projects
  • Experience with Adaptive Planning, BI Reporting tools such as Tableau, Google Data Studio, Power BI
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to occasionally travel
