Job Description

Come work at a tech start-up that is also a nonprofit in the energy sector! WattTime developed the technology known as Automated Emissions Reduction (AER). AER drives revenue by enabling businesses across the world to voluntarily slash emissions.  Our growth and support makes reaching our vision of “AER for everyone everywhere” very much possible in the next five years. That is both exciting and a lot of hard work.

We are looking for a candidate to join our software team who can think critically about architectures, write clean python code, manage large amounts of data, and advocate better patterns. Experience in DevOps, data pipelines, or statistics is a huge plus.

(We are hiring Engineers with different experience, as you may notice from similar job postings. It's a great time to join our Research & Engineering team because we are investing in this team. You would join a group of some pretty amazing folks, as you can see from our Team page)

ABOUT YOU

Here's what we're looking for:

  • 4+ years of experience writing well-structured, code-reviewed, production level software, including a year with a Python backend
  • 4+ years of experience deploying in a CI environment with scalable cloud infrastructure (kubernetes, relational databases, caching, load balancing, etc).
  • Proven experience in monitoring and debugging a large codebase (familiarity with Amazon Cloudwatch preferred)
  • Sound knowledge of software patterns and test strategies
  • Previous experience developing for a product that required data analysis, algorithms, or models
  • Some DevOps exposure or eagerness to learn/understand current systems

We're also looking at:

  • BS, MS in computer science or an engineering related field or relevant experience
  • Excellent grasp on: Python, Pandas, and data pipelines
  • Highly motivated, collaborative, action-oriented, able to lead and to take direction.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working in Linux full time.

ABOUT THE WORK

  • Small, committed team that is building and maintaining our core data product and apis
  • Wear many hats like cloud infrastructure, statistics, ML deployment, scrapers, and automation
  • Heavy emphasis on maintainable, well structured Python code
  • Advocate improvements to patterns, systems, APIs, and DevOps code
  • Requires strong mental models of energy systems and/or a desire to learn them

LOGISTICS

  • Remote location, anywhere in the U.S.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • For those authorized and located in the U.S., WattTime is open to U.S. visa sponsorship. As an H-1B cap-exempt, non-profit research organization, WattTime can sponsor employees for H-1B status throughout the year.
  • Salary: $140,000 - $165,000 based on experience
  • We offer full health coverage (medical, dental, vision) for employees and 80% for dependents + paid parental leave + flexible time off + 403b and up to 5% matching + more
  • Timing: Accepting applications on an aggressive, rolling basis
  • Send a response to the following:
    • Describe a complex software project you were in charge of or played a large role in developing.  Cloud infrastructure/scaling/cross discipline projects are even better.
  • We also have a (Senior) Data Engineer role posted. You can indicate if you have an interest in that role as well.

HIRING PROCESS

  • Initial phone call to answer any of your questions about the role
  • Initial technical interview and take home project. You’re most likely to do well if you have:
    • Strong python skills: you can solve data engineering problems well with code
    • Design capability: you can design data storage and processing architecture well
    • Time in the saddle: you have enough practical software/data engineering experience to have learned from prior mistakes/successes so that we can expect you to join a large project mid-stream and jump in and contribute
  • Half-day of interviews with the team at large
  • Reference checks and an offer
