Job Description

VICE PRESIDENT, UTILITIES AND ENERGY

About the Ad Hoc Group:

The Ad Hoc Group, Inc. (AHG) is an advisory firm that helps startups, larger corporations, and investors successfully grow climate and sustainability-focused businesses in complex, regulated markets. We are experts at the intersection of policy and business and we’re on a mission to help scale the technology businesses the world needs in order to build a more sustainable future. We’ve helped companies like Google Nest, Dandelion, Greenlots, Pano, Urbint, ev.energy, and many more shape their market and accelerate growth.

AHG is a diverse team of advisors and consultants who are deeply passionate about supporting companies in the climate-tech and sustainability space. Our CEO and Founder, Jim Kapsis, was a former climate negotiator in the Obama Administration, a leader of the global regulatory team at Opower, Inc. (acquired by Oracle in 2016), and currently co-hosts the technology podcast Technopolis.

About the Position:

The VP, Utilities and Energy will provide executive-level support to our clients and work closely with AHG’s CEO and Founder to manage our growing team.This position will serve as executive sponsor on our client accounts, provide strategic direction to our internal account team, and leverage their industry expertise and networks to advance our client’s goals (which typically include sales and growth). This role will focus on supporting our clients who sell to utilities and/or whose markets are heavily influenced by utility incentives and regulation. The position is a great next step for someone who has held a senior role working at the intersection of business and policy at one or more successful startups or at a progressive utility and who now wants to use their skills to help a portfolio of startups and other innovators scale their businesses.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with AHG’s current and prospective clients;

  • Cultivate deep relationships with decision makers and innovators who are part of the startup ecosystem (e.g. utilities, VCs, startup founders, government leaders);

  • Provide executive-level support to clients by advising them of how policy and regulation affect their market, and how to sell to and/or partner with utilities;

  • Provide support and guidance to more junior AHG team members and liaise with AHG’s roster of senior advisors.

  • Help grow the AHG business by leveraging new and existing industry relationships.

  • Build the AHG brand through thought leadership on social media platforms and participation in industry events.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A track record of successful people management and culture building;

  • An ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with frequent context switching;

  • Deep expertise in one or more climate-related segments, such as building decarbonization, transportation electrification, resilience, and carbon removal.

  • Strong senior relationships in both industry (e.g. utilities, real estate, automotive OEMs) and policy (e.g. in federal/state/local government and environmental/trade groups).

  • Ability to navigate complex organizations to identify and engage decision-makers.

  • Excellent client relationship management skills;

  • Executive-level written and oral communication skills;

  • 10+ years of experience in startups, utilities, consulting and/or government; senior startup and/or utility experience preferred.

  • MBA, MPP, or related Masters preferred. However, we will consider equivalent  experience in lieu of an advanced degree.

Location:  Remote. This position may require up to 20% domestic travel depending on company and client needs.

Compensation and Benefits: Base salary commensurate with skills, experience, and qualifications. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and company profit share, both of which are based on company and employee performance. All of our employees also have the ability (but not the requirement) to earn commission on new AHG business.
