FOSTER Summer Placement for Neutron Diagnostician

The FOSTER programme's enhanced internship scheme provides students an opportunity to gain work experience within the growing UK fusion industry. The FOSTER programme is looking to build the talent pipeline into the industry. Over the past three years, 83 students have participated in placements in 20 host organisations around the UK, with many receiving offers of employment after their graduation.

The Diagnostics and Data Team at Tokamak Energy is pleased to offer an exciting summer placement focused on the development of advanced neutron and hard x-ray diagnostics. This initiative is part of a potential collaboration aimed at designing a state-of-the-art neutron system suitable for current and future fusion power plants. This role encompasses experimental work such as radiation measurements, calibrations and programming using Phyton, therefore this placement offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in cutting-edge fusion research while contributing to the development of technologies essential for the future of clean energy.

In this role, you will:

• Assist in designing and assembling the neutron detection system
• Developing a light collection system for enhanced efficiency.
• Implementing and optimising the data acquisition system.
• There may also be opportunities to undertake Monte Carlo simulations to model and improve the system’s performance.

By the end of the placement, you will have gained:

• A thorough understanding of neutron detection mechanisms.
• Practical, hands-on experience with experimental setups and data analysis.
• Improved Python programming skills, applying them to real-world scenarios in fusion diagnostics.

Requirements

• Studying a relevant degree or master’s e.g. physics, engineering 

• Ideally some knowledge of neutron detection mechanism 

• Ideally some knowledge of phyton   

• Motivated and enthusiastic with ability to work independently 

• Good communication skills with ability to work collaboratively with team members 

• Good planning and organisation skills 
• Communicating and relating to others (oral / written)
• Decision-making, problem-solving, planning and organising
• Analysis and research

Benefits

• 6 days holiday (plus bank holidays)
• The placement has a maximum duration of 10 weeks.
• The salary is £23,809 per annum, pro-rated and paid monthly.
