Job Brief

We are looking for a Director of Government Relations to successfully impact the energy and technology policy landscape with measurable outcomes for Twelve’s inclusion in the US climate conversation.  This person would be passionate and experienced in promoting carbon transformation within the carbon utilization framework, dedicated to environmental and climate justice, and interested in guiding the expansion of the 45Q carbon tax, the Lower Carbon Fuel Standard, and the Federal Renewable Fuel Standard.  The ideal candidate has experience advocating for sustainable products and procurement within the federal and state government. We seek a senior leader with a proven track record of public policy wins and in making positive change happen.

What You Will Do

  • Develop, inform, and execute a policy and advocacy strategy to achieve Twelve’s short and long-term policy goals.
  • Shape and coordinate all policy and advocacy activities to advance mission and strategy.
  • Lead policy research, including regulatory comment drafting, development of support materials, preparation of spokespersons and testimony, and other activities as needed.
  • Identify and execute coalition-building opportunities in partnership with Twelve’s Head of Partnerships.
  • Provide guidance for engagement strategies, as it relates to environmental justice issues.
  • Collaborate with communications staff on the development and timing of media advocacy efforts
  • Oversee preparation and filing of any required reporting information including local, state, and/or federal lobbying reports, and maintaining of required records
  • Attend and participate in pertinent meetings, including national and regional meetings, retreats, and conferences
  • Build and maintain relationships with key policymakers and staff across all branches of the federal government as well as select state and local offices
  • This person would drive Twelve’s policy development at the state and federal levels.

Who You Are

  • Has successfully impacted energy or technology policy with measurable outcomes
  • 7+ years of relevant work experience required with at least 5 of those years working with lobbyists and policy consultants.  
  • Self-motivated and flexible with communicating with colleagues in different time zones.  
  • Experience working among and leading coalitions is a plus. 
  • Knowledge of carbon capture and utilization (CCUS) and carbon mitigation policies. Past experience working with  45Q, LCFS, or RFS is a huge plus.
  • Strong research, writing, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience monitoring the policy landscape, analyzing proposed legislation, and translating its impact to multiple audiences 
  • Experience drafting materials such as policy memos, talking points, letters, fact sheets, legislative text, and other resources
