Job Description

About the role

As a skilled and driven Mechanical Engineer you will be responsible for the design and development of a novel electrochemical system that enhances the ocean’s natural ability to safely store carbon dioxide from the air, while reducing ocean acidity. You will participate in all stages of the development process from research and development, design and manufacturing, through to installations and final commissioning. The ideal candidate will have superb technical, research and analytical capabilities with a demonstrated ability of designing, building and testing systems in rapid succession.

What You’ll Do

  • Work as part of a team to design, develop, build, test and implement an electrochemical plant
  • Design modular and scalable systems with fully autonomous operation
  • Design and spec equipment consisting of pumps, filters, valves, sensors, and electrochemical cells
  • Design, build, and test prototypes for characterization, optimization and evaluation of theoretical designs
  • Set up tests/experiments, collect and methodically analyze data, and interpret results
  • Apply industry experience to ensure economic, efficient and readily available component selection
  • Work with and manage vendors to source subsystems and components
  • Research and produce effective solutions to emerging problems
  • Review final product’s overall performance, reliability and safety
  • Improve designs to meet requirements and to eliminate malfunctions
  • Collect observations from operators and feedback from users
  • Create product reports and documentation

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • 3+ years industry experience in mechanical design, system design, prototype building and testing
  • Mastery of complex mechanical, electrical and fluid systems
  • Significant experience with product lifecycle management (PLM), finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • Deep knowledge of core concepts and principles of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and fluids
  • Excellent problem solving abilities as well as creative approaches to solving challenging problems with a balance of quantitative understanding of first principles and creative solution space
  • Hands on field experience with the engineering, procurement, and operation of fluid systems
  • Solid experience with computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and good practical experience with 2D or 3D engineering design and manufacturing tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ProE or similar)
  • Experience with engineering analysis tools, such as ANSYS, ProMechanica or similar 
  • Good knowledge of mathematical computing and analysis tools, including Matlab, Excel, LabView or similar
  • Ability to manage external vendors and fabricators
  • Effective communication and presentation skills with strong technical writing ability
  • A sense of humor

Bonus

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Experience in design, construction and/or operation of pilot plants
  • Affinity for working with tools and has hands on experience with fabrication, instrumentation, and assembly of systems
  • Familiar with SolidWorks Pipe Routing
  • Experience with Aspen or similar modeling software
  • Startup experience ideal, startup mentality a must; the ideal candidate is scrappy and gets things done
