Bird is looking to grow its legal team to support the needs of its growing business. We are looking to add a Corporate Counsel, Employment and Litigation with 5-7 years of broad commercial litigation and/or employment law experience. Reporting to Bird’s Legal Director, Employment and Litigation, this position will play a key role in our public company transition and compliance efforts through advice and counseling on employment and workforce issues as well as proactive and strategic management of litigation matters.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic counselor to Bird's Talent team and business leaders on a variety of employment and labor-related issues, including but not limited to employee performance management, workplace investigations, reasonable accommodations, and workforce policies and procedures.
  • Advise business and operations leaders on workforce classification issues such as independent contractor status, FLSA exemptions, and contingent labor.
  • Develop litigation strategy in partnership with business units and outside counsel to drive cost-effective resolution of employment and commercial litigation disputes (including breach of contract and IP-related matters).
  • Conduct legal research and writing for matters where outside counsel is deemed unnecessary (e.g., agency charges, subpoenas, and wage garnishments).
  • Review and negotiate commercial contracts where appropriate and in partnership with Bird's Corporate and Commercial Legal team (e.g., staffing agency contracts).
  • Prepare and conduct legal trainings to mitigate risk for the company.

Requirements

  • J.D.
  • Licensed to practice law in one or more states or the District of Columbia
  • 5-7 Years as a practicing attorney, either in employment litigation (preferred) or general commercial litigation matters.
  • Experience in advising and counseling business leaders and/or HR professionals on challenging legal issues.
  • Ability to communicate complex legal concepts in pragmatic and business-oriented manner.
  • Strong legal research and writing.
  • Detail-oriented and able to multitask and manage competing projects and deadlines.
