About Redwood Materials

Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 to create a circular supply chain for electric vehicles and clean energy products, making them more sustainable and driving down the cost for batteries. We’re doing this by developing and deploying new technologies to increase the scope and scale of recycled and sustainable materials in the global battery supply chain.

Senior Electrochemical Test Engineer

Redwood Materials is seeking a Senior Electrochemical Test Engineer to design infrastructure for testing electrochemical cells, as well as driving execution of testing. In this role, you will execute testing of novel electrochemical cells and systems for converting lithium-ion battery waste material into useful products.  As a core responsibility, you will design test stands, select instrumentation, and fabricate new test rigs. In addition, you will deliver test data to ensure electrochemical cells meet their required performance and lifetime targets. The ideal candidate will bring substantial experience in developing test stands for and executing tests on electrochemical devices, such as electrolyzers, fuel cells, batteries, or similar. You will be expected to collaborate closely with mechanical and chemical engineering design teams to help commercialize a new electrochemical technology.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design and fabricate new electrochemical test stands capable of demonstrating performance and durability in a novel electrochemical conversion device
  • Own the electrical, plumbing, instrumentation, and controls strategy of our test stands
  • Specify, perform, and analyze electrochemical tests to assess performance and durability of electrochemical cell and stack prototypes
  • Drive continuous improvement in electrochemical test stand reliability and data quality
  • Critically analyze experimental data and present results to the broader team in weekly meetings
  • Translate critical learnings from laboratory test stands into design requirements for a commercialized electrochemical system

 Desired Qualifications:

  • BS or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience working as a test engineer, ideally with electrochemical cells or systems
  • Expert in designing test stands and executing rigorous, complex tests
  • Experience in testing and diagnostics of electrochemical cell or systems, such as electrolyzers, chlor-alkali reactors, fuel cells, batteries, or similar
  • Experience with laboratory test stand controls development using MATLAB, LabView, Python or similar
  • Excellent verbal and presentation skills for communicating key findings from test data
  • A passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work hands on the lab, including standing and operating equipment at a lab bench

Working Conditions:

  • Environment: office, machine shop, wet laboratory, chemical plant, outdoor test sites
  • Essential physical requirements: working hands-on in a research lab setting
  • Travel required as needed, less than 10%

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
