Senior Data Engineer

The Role

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to own the architecting and development of our core data platform, including the architecting of our data warehouse and data infrastructure, co-own and supervise the data modelling in our data collection tools as well as support diverse data systems integrations.

Please note this is a Remote First role and we are open to candidates +/- 2hrs CET, however we have a preference for Spain or Germany based candidates due to company registered locations. How you'll help build one•fıve

• Data Platform Ownership: Lead the design and implementation of our data platform, ensuring scalability and robustness..

• Data Modelling: engage in data modelling for third-party data collection tools like Benchling, optimizing data structures for effective data integration and utilization. Support stakeholders owning third-party data collection tools (ERPs, CRMs, etc) by providing insights and recommendations to make their data models more robust.

• Data Visualization and Analytics culture: Foster a strong data analytics culture by developing and implementing a robust data analytics layer to support insights generation, ML development and analytics dashboards.

• Cloud Infrastructure Management: Participate in managing our cloud infrastructure to support data operations and application needs effectively.

• Strategic Planning: Actively contribute to discussions and development of the Tech roadmap, aligning technology initiatives with business goals.

• Supervision and Mentorship: oversee and mentor juniors or interns, ensuring adherence to best practices and maintaining high-quality codebases.

• Cross-Domain Collaboration: Work closely with Domain experts to model data after business logic. Engage with Software Engineers and Data Scientists to ensure seamless integration of cloud services, including data pipelines and machine learning services.

Who you are

• You have at least 3 years of proven experience in data engineering and data platform architecture, particularly in startup and scale-up environments.

• You are very experienced in data modeling and database design for diverse types of data and uses. Plus if you have experience modelling scientific data.

• Demonstrated ability to lead challenging projects in research or similar organizations

• You thrive in collaborative settings, valuing open-minded communication and consensus with peers.

• Proficient in SQL and building Python-based ETL pipelines.

• Advanced knowledge of cloud services and infrastructure, with hands-on experience in Google Cloud Platform or AWS preferred.

• You enjoy working with cross-functional teams in remote/hybrid environments.

• You have working knowledge of English, as this is our business language. 

• Ability to adapt to rapidly changing technology landscapes and business needs.

• Eagerness to continuously learn and update skills in line with the latest industry trends.

• Optional, experience working with or modelling materials engineering / chemistry / biological data.
