Full time role
Hybrid 路 Mountain View, CA, US... more
At Wisk, we're transforming the future of urban mobility through safe, all-electric, autonomous flight. We are a passionate team working together toward a sustainable future, solving high-impact problems that have never been solved before. By delivering everyday flight for everyone, we're making it possible to spend less time getting there and more time being there. If you want to be part of shaping the future of mobility, then read on!

We are looking for a Staff Battery Thermal Design Engineer to join our team. The goal of a Staff Battery Thermal Design Engineer at Wisk is to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable thermal management of high-performance battery systems for our electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. You will be part of the Energy Storage and Power Systems (ESPS) product team that develops and optimizes battery thermal solutions to support high-power density, fast-charging, and extended operational life requirements.

This is a hybrid work opportunity. At Wisk, this means working onsite at our Mountain View, CA office three days per week, with flexibility for remote work on the remaining days.

In this role you will:

  • Design, develop, and optimize battery thermal management systems for high-performance eVTOL battery packs.
  • Conduct thermal modeling, simulations, and validation testing to ensure battery safety, efficiency, and longevity.
  • Collaborate with battery design, powertrain, aerodynamics, and system integration teams to optimize thermal performance.
  • Develop innovative cooling and heating strategies for high-power battery applications, ensuring compliance with aerospace safety standards.
  • Lead failure mode analysis (e.g., thermal runaway mitigation) and define safety-critical thermal management strategies.
  • Support battery certification efforts by working with regulatory agencies and ensuring compliance with aviation standards.

What you will do:

  • You will take part in designing, testing, and validating advanced battery thermal management solutions to improve safety, performance, and efficiency.
  • You will support cross-functional teams, including battery design, mechanical, electrical, and system integration teams, to optimize thermal performance.
  • You will help support problem-solving activities related to thermal challenges in battery packs, including cooling efficiency, heat dissipation, and thermal runaway mitigation.
  • You will take part in coordinating thermal validation and verification testing to meet aerospace industry safety standards.
  • In some areas, you will be working closely with certification, safety, and compliance teams to ensure battery thermal management solutions align with regulatory requirements.
  • You will plan and execute thermal analysis, CFD simulations, and lab-scale prototype testing to validate thermal performance.
  • As a Staff Battery Thermal Design Engineer, you will help define thermal management strategies, material selection, and cooling system architectures for next-generation battery systems.

Requirements:

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Thermal Sciences, or a related field with at least 8+ years of experience in battery thermal management, preferably in aerospace, automotive, or energy industries.
  • You have worked in battery systems, electric powertrains, or aerospace electrification industries.
  • You have hands-on experience developing, integrating, and testing battery thermal management solutions, including liquid cooling, phase-change materials, or active cooling techniques.
  • You have a deep and applied knowledge of thermal modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, and battery pack safety analysis.
  • You have led projects that achieved successful battery system thermal performance improvements, safety enhancements, or efficiency optimizations.
  • You are familiar with aviation battery safety standards (DO-311A, ARP4761, AS6413) and battery thermal testing methodologies.
  • Experience with thermal runaway prevention strategies, fire suppression methods, and regulatory compliance is a plus.
  • This role may require up to 20% travel for testing, supplier visits, or regulatory engagements.
