Your Opportunity

One Permanent Full Time Position.   

Join our dynamic Trading & Origination Team as a Legal Contract Specialist and play a key role in managing and negotiating power and commodity contracts across North America!

As a Legal Contract Specialist, you will primarily be supporting our Trading & Origination Team, who purchase and sell power in addition to power related commodities (such as renewable energy credits for example) across Canada and the United States on behalf of Capital Power Corporation and its subsidiaries. This position plays an integral role facilitating the efficient, organized, reliable and risk-managed negotiation, execution and management of our commodities and related commercial contracts.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Managing and responding to requests for commodities contracts and other contracts (such as non-disclosure agreements).
  • Being the point of contact for counterparty negotiations and correspondence.
  • Preparing, editing, and revising contract drafts and amendments to meet organizational need.
  • Preparing draft agreements from a template library, inserting counterparty and transaction information and sending draft agreements to counterparties for review.
  • Consulting with internal legal counsel to arrange the review of revisions requested by counterparties.
  • Tracking legal documents through the execution process, ensuring proper signatures, timely approvals and accurate filing.
  • Leading meetings with members of the Trading & Origination, Credit, Risk Management and Legal teams to report and obtain updates on progress of work.
  • Collecting counterparty information and ensure that all counterparty and contract information is documented accurately and communicated to the appropriate departments.
  • Managing and administering the contract and templates database, including preparing and organizing revisions to templates.

What you will bring to the role:  

Education:

  • Completed Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or a Paralegal Certificate with relevant experience.
  • Education equivalency may be considered.

Experience:

  • 4 - 8 years’ related experience, including experience supporting legal transactions or in a contract management role in a fast-moving business. 
  • Understanding of contractual risk and some ability to interpret contract language.
  • Paralegal experience would be an asset

Technical Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Capable of working under pressure, effectively prioritizing tasks, and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated with a positive attitude and strong collaboration and communication abilities.
  • Comfortable working across various departments and with counterparties.
  • Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Flexible and capable of handling a mix of routine and non-routine tasks.
  • Able to maintain concise, accurate and well-organized records.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and DocuSign/Adobe Sign.
  • Experience with Allegro ERTM, SharePoint and Power BI Analytics would be an asset but is not required.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid Office/Work from home position, with possible very minimal travel to meet business users at Capital Power facilities or other offices.
